I just finished posting how my favorite gift was that my husband was okay after his surgery last night and I think I jinxed it.

He just threw up and I think it might be from the medicine?

he just had a varicocele repair last night and the doctor prescribed endocet. They said he could take 2 pills at a time but he has only had 1 pill at a time so far 3 doses total. He said he started feeling a little light-headed and that he was nauseas and then yup he tossed his cookies.

now my question is should he take his medicine again tonight as usual,i cant get to the rx to fill his other prescription for tylenol with codeine until tomorrow. they wouldnt fill both rx at the same time. He is feeling okay now since he threw up but there are no pharmacies open for me to call and I was curious what to do.

thanks for any suggestions anyone can offer!!

Have him try taking the next scheduled dose after eating something.

If Endocet (oxycodone) upset his stomach, chances are Tylenol with Codeine will as well.

thank for the quick reply.
I will have him take his next normal dose and keep a bag by the bed :)

thanks again!!!

Oh...and I'm not a nurse, but I play one on TV! ;)

Seriously though, this type of pain med is notorious for causing upset stomachs and vomitting. If he is in need of pain relief, I'd have him take the meds (it's better than being in pain) but definitely take it while eating something, or after eating something. Works for me.

Just wanted to pop in and say how nice it is to have people like you on the CB Blondie. :D

I'm not a Dr. nor a nurse BUT...my dh, myself and DS(at different times;) )!) both had to get an additional prescription for Phenergon to combat the nausea those horrid pills brought on! Then we got off of them asap by going to the Motrin/Tylenol alternating combo. Good luck!:D

Is he in pain? Some people do not have much pain after certain procedures - I'd only take the medicine for pain if I felt like I needed it. Having said that, pain medicine works best if taken before the patient starts having major pain. The suggestion to take the medicine with food is a good one.

Also, is he having nausea without it being related to the pain med or are you sure it's the pain med?

Sometimes, you can take larger does of advil for a LIMITED TIME for pain relief (and only do this if your doctor advises it - not just because someone mentioned it on the internet).

My real advice: If he currently can not keep down his pain med, call your MD even if it is Christmas night (that's their JOB) discuss the situation and get his/her professional advice. (If your husband throws up the pain med it won't do him a bit of good). More than likely you will have to give your message to a message service but someone should call you back.
Have your husbands current situation to describe (is he currently having nausea? Does he have a temp? Is he in pain - describe on a scale of 0 - 10 with 0 being none, 10 being the most horriable pain imaginable. What kind of pain? Generalized or localized? Sharp, dull, etc... Any bleeding? Level of consciousness? Any other symptoms, etc... Remember, you are trying to help the nurse/doc make a decision so give them as much info as possible.

That's good advice Puffy2. I would call the doctor's service and explain the situation. I really dislike these "quickie" operations, and then the patients are discharged so fast. It seems so many questions arise after getting home. {{hugs}} for a speedy recovery.
