I was just wondering if there were any fans here of either of these great British sci fi series. I love them and I'm pretty sure I have seen evvery episode (for docotr who though it is just of the newer series). These are great shows and I was just wondering if any disers are fans.

Torchwood fan here! Or more precisely a John Barrowman/Captain Jack fan.:worship: I also like Ianto, so wasn't very happy with the ending of COE.:sad2:

I have the 4 current series of Dr Who on DVD, but honestly, only really (re)watch the Captain Jack episodes. My DS13 likes Dr Who, so I tend to dip in and out of it if he's watching it.

I started watching Doctor Who back in the 80s...the Tom Baker episodes were on our local PBS station back then. I must say, the effects are better and the Doctor is much hotter now!

I have managed to suck DBF into the show as well. He only saw the last 4 episodes of the Martha season, then said he wants to see more. So I've been renting them from Netflix, starting with the Christopher Eccleston shows, so he can get the whole "new" story!

I'm mourning David Tennant's Doctor, though. Dear (Time) Lord, he is my FAVORITE Doctor ever!

I'm a huge fan of both. Doctor Who much more so than Torchwood, but CoE was the most fantastic, most draining 5 hours of television I've ever experienced. I just find that Doctor Who is more in line with my tastes, which is evidenced by how many times I've seen the episodes. There's only one episode since 2005 that I've seen just once, and that's "Blink", just because it is so perfectly awesome that I don't want to watch it again and have it be ruined. Every other episode, I've seen no less than 3 times. And it never gets old.

And I'm with apirateslifeforme, I'm heartbroken that David Tennant is no longer on the show, as he is "my" Doctor. (Although... him playing Hamlet... wow, that was brilliance right there.)

I watched Dr. Who for one season in the 80s, and don't know why I haven't watched it since then (oh yeah, I had kids ....)! But I saw the previews for Torchwood before the first season, and I've been HOOKED!!!! Now I'm not sure how I'm going to be able to get the Dr. Who seasons -- any suggestions on how far back I have to go to understand what's going on? I really don't remember much of the one season I saw, and I bet I won't be able to find all the episodes. I do love Torchwood, though!

I cried when Ianto was killed off during COE, I cried during "Exit Wounds" and I cried during "The End of Time" so yup. I'm a fan.

Go back to 2005. There are only 13 episodes per season (and a Christmas special), so it's very manageable compared to American shows. :)

Here's how I keep new Who seasons straight:

1 and 2: Rose was Companion and debut of Captain Jack in series 1.
3. Martha was Companion and Donna was in the Christmas special
4. Donna is Companion and we also meet her grand dad in the Christmas special.

I love Captain Jack too. He is one of the best characters ever. I love the episodes with James Marster too, combining two of my favorite shows Torchwood and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I want so badly for there to be more torchwood episodes.

David Tennant is my favorite too. I never really like christopher eccleston and I think the David Tennant is just amazing. Although from the few little clips and last few seconds of End of Time the new Doctor, Matt Smith, looks pretty good.

"Blink" is one of my favorite episodes ever. I think I have only seen once, maybe twice, but I think it just felt so differnt from any of the other episodes and so it really stood out to me as a great episode.

I cried too at the end of CoE, I just couldn't believe it was only Jack and Gwen left of the original team, and End of Time, I miss David Tennant already.

I still don't wanna talk about it. :( I'm devestated by David Tennant's departure! I'm still a fan and I'll give this new guy a chance.

I do love Torchwood too.

I sure am. Fox is creating an American version of Torchwood.

I'm not sure how I feel about it. The fact that Julie Gardner and Russell Davies makes me feel a bit better, but I still don't think it's going to be great. I guess I'll just have to wait and see.

Very sad about David Tennant leaving, but I'm actually looking forward to Matt Smith.

Dh and I finally watched the finale with DT last weekend. I miss him already :sad1: It's going to take a while to get used to the new Doctor.

Was I the only one doing a double take with UK Life on Mars early on? After The Master showed up during End of Time especially.

But I loved Donna's granddad!

I just read the article and although I don't know how well it would work the article did say that they might get John Barrowman to star in the pilot and if they get Captain Jack all will be well.

I think the Torchwood concept, itself, is worthy of production, and the reuse of the title along with exploiting the coat-tails of the UK series, can have some positive impact, wholly apart from any benefit there might be from in any other way deferring to aspects of the UK series, i.e., using the same cast or crew. So effectively, the series concept could stand on its own.

The part of the concept that is most ripe for a USA franchising of the series is Torchwood, itself -- the "Institute" -- the secret organization, established in the 19th century, its prime purpose is to defend the earth against extraterrestrial threats. And given the typical American viewer, it would not be enough that the main character has an American accent, the Torchwood Institute itself would have to be American, not British.

I don't see any reason why they wouldn't approach Barrowman. He's got an American accent, so his accent wouldn't dissuade them from using him. He's a flamboyant guy, IRL, but professional, so there shouldn't be any concerns along those lines. However, that doesn't mean that he's going to be willing to do the job, given the terms and conditions being offered. The show concept doesn't live or die on Barrowman (so there is probably no good reason to offer him much more money or other considerations than they'd offer him if he was previously not associated with the series.)

The main problem is that it's FOX!

Since most of you appear to be newer fans, you might not be aware but back in 1996, Fox wanted Doctor Who.

They even had a made for tv movie made with an option to have a full series if the movie did well in the ratings...

It didn't and Fox pretended it never happened.

Between that, The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr, Firefly and others, I really don't trust Fox with science fiction. The X-Files and Fringe seem to be flukes.

To be fair, the movie sucked, and so Fox was reasonably deterred from pursuing the Doctor Who idea further.

Fox actually has tried a lot of genre programming. So has NBC. So has ABC. And there are folks who dump on each one of them, for canceling such programming when it has done poorly. Sometimes, It seems to me that there is a problem, but it is with the viewers. We're so few (with an interest in this genre) and so fickle.

I read about that tv movie on wikipedia and it just sounded awful. I mean who really wants to see Eric Roberts as the master. I hope if the American version goes through they will take it seriously and do a decent version like they did with the office and not what they did with coupling.
