I'm thinking of going back to school to become a dental assistant and would like to here what made others become a dental assistant.
What are the pros and cons of this career? :)

the pros and cons of the job are definitely based on who your employer is....also the practice that you choose....pedodontics, endodontics, periodontists, oral surgeons, etc....
I was fortunate and worked for 2 wonderful Prosthodontist (crown and bridge) dentists for many years.
Pros for me are that I absolutely need a very diverse job description, the more varied duties the happier I am. Therefore, taking impressions, taking x-rays, getting work ready for the lab, sterilizing instruments, preparing for procedures, charting, etc. were a real pro for me. I also assisted their onsite "lab man", so I also learned to make temporary crowns and bridges, cast gold inlays and crowns, make ceramic castings and do make porcelain vaneers. Also, being a "chatty-cathy" type I loved seeing more than 20-30 patients a day. Being a neat freak helped out too, because I liked to get the operatories in tip top clean condition....and I also liked to have control over getting the patients in and out on time. All in all it was probably an all pro job for me....oh, yeah, big pro is that usually your doc will do your dental work for you and just charge you any lab fees. Now being older I would think that the only con for me would be the amount of time that you spend on your feet.
One Big Con would be for anyone who cannot stand saliva and blood. There are quite a few people out there with some real ropey saliva, and that can be really messy and gross....especially when your patient can't seem to get it in the cuspidor. :rotfl: oh yeah....and some have a real bad gag reflex and that can get quite interesting too :rotfl2: So if you are not squimish with any of those issues, the rest is pretty ok :goodvibes

 Me!
I have a favorite aunt who is a dental assistant and she seemed to love her job immensely so I thought I would check it out. In high school I took a class but didn't do anything with it. Then about 18 months ago a dentist here was looking for an assistant and said he'd train. I got the job, worked for him for a bit (didn't really hit it off with the other girls) and decided I really liked it so in Sept. I'm starting a refresher course and that way I can be registered and certified.

The money ain't bad. About $10 an hour to start fresh from school but about $14 is average around here. You can't beat the hours and it's a pretty low stress job. I say go for it. I really love it and I'm just kicking myself that I didn't go back to it much earlier!!!

Is 33 to late to go back to school for this ? :confused3

I am a SAHM and looking to get back in the work force and I am looking for more than just a job.I have thought about dental work for sometime but always chicken out.

thanks for your input

no way! 33 is young....I have 20 years over you, that is what I meant by older :teeth:

Well, I'm 42 and when I graduate from my refresher course I'll be 43. How old will you be if you don't go back to school? :confused3 Go for it!!!

Where are you thinking of going to school?

Me!

I've been assisting for 15 years. I've worked at several General Dental practices, and did pediatric for 7 years. I loved the pedi. We went to the hospital 3-4 times a month and did rehab cases under general anesthesia. It was neat being in a hospital setting.

Only because you asked for cons-you have to find the right dentist to work with. My first job was for a woman who I loved. I worked with her until she decided she didn't want to be a dentist anymore :guilty: . I then had a pretty diffucult time finding someone I could work with, that closely. The pediatric dentist was good, now I work for another woman who is really nice too.

Good luck going back to school!!!! 33 is not to old!!! I have a friend on another board who went to school even older. She is now assisting full time for a dentist and loves it!!

I was thinking of attending one of the community colleges in my area.
