Hi everyone,
seems really trivial compared to some of the threads here at the mo but wondered if there are any cold sore sufferers on the board. Had my first one start to appear today! So was wondering what the best treatments or remedies are, or any cures to get them gone super fast. Many thanks for any replies x

My hubby gets terrible cold sore, really horrible, he starts putting cream on when he feels it tingling.

aciclovir 5 per cent cream (eg Zovirax cold sore cream)get boots own make.

on when he feels it coming, iys such a shame, its the sun that triggers them mostly, so he always gets them on hols, last holiday he had acciclir tablets to take when on holiday but he still got a big horrible one,
I hope your not like him and get them all the time, ps, I have never got one from him, so I believe you either get them or not.
Hope it gets better soon.

Hi Claire

I know how you feel hon, I have 2 cracking cold sores at the moment and suffering badly with flu, but I do get them often in the sun, Once you have them you seem to be more prone to them coming back. They are so sore and everytime I smile or try to eat they crack and bleed. I bought Zovirax, but it hasnt really done anything as I think you need to use it the min you feel the tingling start and they develop. I know its very old fashioned and I dont know where I got it from but I dab a small drop of perfume on mine and it seems to work.

Hope you manage to clear them up soon

Occasionally i get one & i find that "Creme De La Mer's" Lip balm works really well,,,Quite pricey though,If memory serves me its about £40:scared1: Works for me though:)

:goodvibes

I get them every once in a while, usually when I'm run down or been poorly. I used to use the creams, but have since discovered Compeed patches and these have worked for me.

They're small clear patches which go over the cold sore and are medicated. It advises use for 10 days after the tingle. They've been great, as I didn't even get a scab forming with them, as they're covered and no air gets to it. Hasn't left a horrible 'red' mark like I've had previously either.

Thankyou very much, I have had a head cold all week and feeling quite low so I guess this has brought it on. Will be heading to boots once I drop the kids off! I hope you feel better soon Sue x

I had terrible problems for years until a school nurse gave me, of all things, vitamin A&D ointment. That's the stuff moms buy for babie's diaper rash. Cleared it up and works great whenever my lips start to dry out.

I religiously carry cold sore cream with me wherever I go. If I feel even the slightest tingle, I put some on. I haven't had one for about 18 months now and I used to get them two-three times a year. :thumbsup2

If you don't manage to catch it in time, I recommend lemon juice.

I haven't tried it myself, but a colleague swears by Vicks -the sort you rub on your chest. :confused3

dad suffers from them and swears by the old wives remedy of rubbing them (as soon as you feel the tingle and then regularly) with ground coffee (not decaff). He has found them to go much quicker when he does!!!

DH gets them, he rubs some aftershave on it (to dry it out) and also says that lycsium (spelt something like that its pronounced lie-see-em) tablets help prevent them if you take them every day. :)

Hi,

{A bit late but someone alerted me to this so here goes!}

The cold sore doctor is in the house!

Sorry if it's the same old story but I'm quite evangelical about this. As a very long term sufferer I've tried everything under the sun from creams and potions to eating brazil nuts etc.

Now, I went to Florida a couple of years back and forgot my Zovirax. Massive cold sore under way so I went to Chemist in Orlando.

They suggested LYSINE tablets and I've never looked back.

Yes - over 7 years - cold sore free!

Afterhsave, witch hazel etc will only dry the affected area.

Vaseline and creams will keep the area moist and away from cracking.

Zovirax works only if you catch it in the early stages but you can get immune to it.

Lysine is one of the few preventative measures - stops cold sores forming.

You can get Lysine in Holland & Barretts etc these days and you'll need to take them either when you feel the first tingle or if you are going to be in a situation which'll "trigger" the cold sore.

I hope this helps, prevention is far better than cure!
