Are there any Canadians renting out DVC points and if so, have you had success renting them and for how much?

Just thinking about DVC ourselves and wonder if we buy about 150 points and use about 1/2, we could sell the remaining 75 points for $750.00 to pay for the annual maintenance fee.

Does this sound like a good idea or am I missing something???

Yes we rent ours when need be and they rent for anywhere from 12-17 a point depending on how we post them. We use E Bay for rentals it really works well you just call and make a prime reservation like Christmas US t giving or pres week and post it on e bay and watch the bidders roll in LOL.

Your idea sounds good but can you actually get space those weeks or is it difficult?

I have to tell you that I would hate to be stuck with either of those two weeks because they must be the busiest weeks of the entire year.

We have never had any trouble getting them at the 7 month window and they get snapped up quickly on e bay just make sure you set a reserve that works out to a minimum of 12.00 US per point.

Check out the Rent/Trade board ... it will give you an idea of how many points people are generally looking for, and also gives you an idea of how much the going rate for points is. A lot of times, the price per point will depend on whether or not there is a short timeframe that the points need to be used by. In cases where sellers either need to rent them or lose them, they will offer great deals.

I've rented once, from people who live in the same city as me. It worked out great for our Jan trip. Now I have a sister who bought DVC, so we're renting from her for our upcoming Oct trip. :goodvibes

Lots of Cdn DVC'ers here so I'm sure you can get lots of input. Good luck with your decision.

Charles - how far in advance of the reservation do you put them on Ebay? We haven't rented any of ours yet but if I need to in the future this is what I would like to do.

We reserve it at 7 months and post it at 5 or 6 months out people are usually into trip planning mode by then for those times.

How early should one put their reserved week up for auction? I have Thanksgiving weekend reserved (11/23-11/27) but don't know when the best time to put it up for auction on eBay would be.

Also, should I book one more day to make it a five night vacation or do you think the four day weekend is enough?

Thanks for your input :earsboy:

I would venture to guess that even 4 days at that time is fine I would post it about 5 months prior to the date of stay seems to work well. You also have the option of adding the extra day if somone wants it so the winning bidder can be told there is an option for an extra day a x number of dollars if they wish to take it.

I rented at OKW last week, decided last minute on 4/5 to leave for a trip 4/9, and in less than an hour found someone to rent me points and made the deal on the DVC rent/trade board.

Now, I do have a US bank account and live 20 min from the border, so it was pretty easy to work out, but I would think that a money order on a Cdn bank and using FedEx here would be just as easy.

Recently, I had a change of job and I cannot travel until Dec 2006, so I decided to give the rental/exchange board a try, within 2 weeks, I rented out all my current year's points.
