My DH insists that it is possible to get Direct TV in Canada. He wants to buy a dish and receiver on our upcoming trip to Orlando. Does anyone have any experience/insight with receiving Direct TV service in Canada?

Yes it is possible as I have had it for the last 6 years. Problem is, you need someone in the States who has Direct TV to put you on his account, much like the way satellite customers do it up here. Trying to find that person is hard. It would be better if a family member who lived in the states could set you up.

Isn't that one of those things that people rely on codes that they get from the internet to unlock the receiver? It's sort of a grey area in terms of being legal here in Canada.

Possibly? My DH wants to pay for the service though. He doesn't want to be bothered with codes and service interruptions..... He just really likes Direct TV. He believes that he can get the service if he has a U.S. mailing address.

You can not get DTV via internet codes. Those days are long gone. But a U.S. mailing address may do the trick. And in the eyes of the Canadian goverment, it is illegal to own DTV because of very little Canadian content. I pay for mine from a U.S. resident who has 4 receivers on his contract. The old receivers/chip cards from years ago are obsolete so you need everything new. I am sure that you would be able to sign a few extra people up to share the costs.

What happens when they do audits as periodically they do.
My DD lives in NYC and has DirectTV. 2 receivers. Once in awhile they call and ask her to verify the receivers and if she couldn't? Failed audit. It's pooling and a whole security dept in these companies who have nothing better to than find people doing just this might just be the downfall.

Trust me, I know.

Thanks, but he is not interested in trying to "share" a system with someone. He really just wants to pay for Direct TV service. He hates the "Canadian content" forced on us by the CTRC.

Now I wish I had Directv today so I could see the GOOD Superbowl commercials! :confused3

it is quite illegal to have Dish in Canada

Per Industry Canada:

http://www.ic.gc.ca/eic/site/smt-gst.nsf/eng/sf01968.html

For individuals convicted of the same, penalties will be increased from a maximum of $5 000 and/or a maximum of one year in jail to a fine not exceeding $25 000 and/or a maximum of one year in jail.

True

Doesn't make it right though.
Little freedom of choice would be nice! I do not watch Canadian content and won't until it gets better! That's just the way it is.

Were it that simple we would all be paying for it!
Have to have a U.S address / U.S phone number. They can call you at anytime and verify the receiver. They don't get you..you are shut down.

Simple as that.

You are completely wrong, simple as that.

I've had DirecTV since about a year before the shutdown many years ago, so I actually KNOW what I'm talking about, unlike you.

Really?
Well you are pirating-and trust me - one day you will get caught!
And I ALSO know what I am talking about!:thumbsup2

I am inclined to agree with Minnie on this one. I have always heard rumours that you could get DTV without an American feed/contact but no one could ever come up with the proof. Joetoronto, I see that this is your first post. Funny that you should post something non Disney on a Disney board.
I am not calling you a liar but sure wish that you would help us all out with this knowledge. It would sure be appreciated!!!

It's breaking a civil law..they can audit at anytime..ask you to pull up a menu..won't take long before they realize hmmm..Canadian phone #??

My husband has been in Satellite telecommunications for more than 30 years. If anyone could have it ( and once upon a time we did!) we would-trust me.
Especially as we do have use of a US address etc.

If you have a US address and get a US cell phone or Google Voice number, would you not be able to pass the audit and be fine.

If so, I would think that direct TV would be happy to have another paying customer.

Seems like a lot of pain for not much gain. Lack of local programming, lack of Canadian news programs, lack of Canadian feed for the Olympics (which blows American coverage out of the water). You should support CanCon, and you can just watch all the super bowl commercials online.
