Any Canadians Have a US Target Red Card?

I'm interested in getting a Target credit card for use in the US. I only go to the States a few times per year, but the 5% savings on the Disney gift cards is enticing.
I started filling out the application on line, but it requires a SS number. I'm not comfortable giving my SIN, and obviously don't have a SS#. How does this work?

Try leaving it blank it's not really something they need. The only places legally allowed in Canada to ask for it are the government and your work place

Yes, I have one but I have a SS #. Try calling the help number. I know other Canadians have one - but they may have a number also (others who I know who work in the U.S.). Same as at Kohl's. You can get one without a SS #.

Yes, you can use your Canadian Target Red Card in the U.S.

However, you will be charged the 2.5% foreign exchange fee. That cuts those additional savings in half.

Another option is to use the Target Debit card. I do have the US credit card but they only start you with a $200 limit. We spend much more than that when we visit. BUt we recently opened an account with tdbank in the US. This now allows us to use the Target debit card since my understanding is that it just links to your existing bank account. I need to look into that further for our next trip, but that should work just as well.

Yes, we have a US Target card and a Canadian Target Card. I don't think the application would proceed until we put in our social insurance number, if I recall correctly.

The problem with the US Target card, is that they start with very small limits, and really don't increase much at all.

They won't check Canadian credit score, so you have to have another US credit card, or you really aren't going to qualify.

We are high income earners, so we have a huge limit on our Canadian Target Card, but in the US, all they will give us $700.00, despite the fact that our account is paid in full by them taking it in a preauthorized payment from our US bank account (based in Georgia @ RBC).

US Target is very frustrating to deal with in terms of credit increases. We have had ours for almost 2 years - never a late payment as they take it from account, have frequently gone right to the limit of $700.00 and we put extra down, but they won't increase our limit at all.

I can't remember if any of the Targets in Eastern Canada have opened yet.

Canadian Targets have a very small gift card selection, and there are no Disney gift cards at all. I really don't expect them to have them here though.

Like I said, the selection is very small, and most Canadian stores don't even have cards there, as I saw Starbucks, McDonalds, Facebook and I can't remember the rest. The selection at Real Canadian Superstore is huge, and the selection at Shoppers is not too bad, but the Target selection is very small thus far.

I have a new Cdn Target debit, and it can not be used at US stores. When I applied for it, the customer service rep said that the credit card can be used at US stores, but the discount doesn't apply in US stores? That's why I wanted a US card.

Yes, that is correct, that cards don't work for discount in each country. I missed answering that above.

Two different cards issues by two different banks in each country.

You can use your CDN card at Target as a regular credit card, but you will not get the 5% discount. As mentioned above, you will have the foreign transaction fee apply.

I spoke to Target about this, and they said that they weren't able at this time to get the cards to work in each country for the discount.

That sucks. Might just stick with another card for US then - like collect Air Miles or something so I can atleast redeem for Disney tickets or GC's.

I applied for my US Target card on the spot at the Target store when I was there - at the customer service desk. I believe you still have to give them your SIN, but at least you're not doing this online so I'd assume it's safer. They give you a temporary card to use right away in the store and then your real one comes in the mail about a week later.

I feel like this is the line that they give officially, but I have bought a Starbucks GC in Canada with my Target Canada Mastercard and it gave me the 5% off the Starbucks GC.

I would assume that it is the same in Canada as the US, in that you can get the 5% off on non-Target GCs (aka Entertainment cards such as Starbucks, McDonalds), but the 5% discount will NOT be given on the Target GCs.
