Hi all

Our home in Fairview is just about done and we planned on driving from NH to Asheville the day after Christmas.

Well, just our luck, you guys get a blizzard dumping 16 in of snow!
(By the way, we got nothing!)

My question is--how are you guys handling this? Is everything pretty much shut down? Are the roads cleared?

I've tried calling the furniture co we ordered furniture from and there has been no answer for the past 3 days.

Our house is on a mountain and I have no idea if they will plow this.

So sorry to be bringing our lousy weather down!

Hey from South Asheville! Welcome to the neighborhood!

The main roads are plowed. Anything with a yellow line is plowed, but most are one lane only. Neighborhood streets haven't been touched. Remember that we rarely get this kind of snow, so we just don't have the equipment.

We went to the mall today and people are starting to get out. Unfortunately, it is supposed to be very cold tonight, so they are very worried about the roads freezing over again. The hope is that most of the snow/ice on the roads will thaw by Wednesday. Just watch the weather closely, though, because there is a system coming in on Christmas Eve and they don't know what it is going to do.

As for the furniture store, which one is it? Over 40% of Progress Energy customers lost power, so it may be that they don't have power.

Both of those should have power. Odd that they aren't answering. Try them midday tomorrow. The roads will be dicey first thing in the morning, but I would think by early afternoon, someone should be at the store.

Best of luck, and send me a private message if you have any more questions. My husband's job requires him to have a pretty good idea of what the roads are like, so I might be able to help. Or if you have any other questions, let me know!

You don't have anything to worry about. The snow doesn't last long here.

Normally that is true, but because of the cold nights and not so warm days and the depth of the snow (particularly in the Fairview area, where some of the mountaintops got more snow today) it will take a lot longer for this stuff to go away.

I live in Fairview and it is still pretty dicey here. The main roads are cleared but our back roads are a mess. Keep in mind, they are calling for another storm to come through on the 23rd so keep watching:-)

PM me if you want to discuss specific roads in Fairview. I'm venturing to work tomorrow so I'd be happy to give you a better idea when I get out there.

Heather

I just spoke to one of our neighbors and they have been unable to find anyone to plow the mountain so they haven't left their house since Friday!

Anyone want to drive down to NC to make some money plowing? Apparently there is a huge need right now.

I agree with littleeyz. I am just down the road in Arden (our daughter goes to school with Fairview kids) and the "main roads" are great, but the side roads and neighborhood roads are a nightmare. I have at least two friends who live up mountains who are stuck and have no way to get out. I was surprised today how many roads that I thought would be fine were still very icy. I was also surprised at the number of abandoned cars there still are out there.
Keep safe!

Hi another one from Asheville checking in.
all I have to say is the roads are very Dangerous tonight:scared1:. We just got in a bit ago and there were wrecks everywhere. It is a solid sheet of ice out there. It is just awful I will be waiting for awhile before I go into work in the morning.
My DH took me this morning and came back and got me tonight. My car is snowed in and will be to Spring time. I have not seen anything like this in years and years.
So to the ones that are already here please stay in and if you have to get out wait until it warms up a bit in the morning before you head out.

Our best man (from our wedding) lives part-time in Arden!

He's there now with his family and maybe our Christmas presents to them will be delayed due to snow.

It's so discouraging hearing this! We thought we finally found someone to plow out the mountain but it doesn't look like he showed up. Our builder tried to get to our house and got stuck for 3 hrs.

I know someone who plows. Not sure the cost, but I could ask him if it's okay if I send him your name/number. He's a Jersey boy, so he's used to the snow/ice.
