I'm looking to take Amtrak from St. Louis to Chicago. When I try to book I'm given two train numbers to what seem to be the same train. One is #322 and the other #22. They both leave and arrive at the same time. One has a higher fare than the other, but they both seem to be for just one reserved coach seat, neither is an accomodation. Why are there two different train numbers and fares, when it seems to be the same thing? Are there different levels of coach seats?

there are two levels of coach. If you can't get it right call amtrak. Also do a search for discount codes. They are out there.

Wow! Quick answer. OK, that explains the price difference. Are we going to be breathing in smoke with the lower fare? :rotfl: I already have a AAA discount, but I'll look around for others. Thanks.

there should be no price difference. both levels of coach are the same. Are the both direct trains, no stops? Check to see if one is an express. I can't understand the price difference. If it's train numbers not seat numbers that are different they can't be the same train. On their site it should also give the train name. See if that's the same.

The train name is the same Texas Eagle. Just the numbers are different, 322 and 22. I can't possibly imagine there are two trains leaving from St. Louis and arriving in Chicago at the exact same time. I clicked on one link and the only difference I can see in route is one train continues down to Texas. I will call Amtrak tomorrow, but I thought I would ask here first.

YOu might ask over on trainweb.com or flyertalk.com Amtrak sections. There are some real pros over there!

My guess is that each train serves a different part of the route, but I don't really know since each train number shows different seats...strange. I don't really know the difference between the coach sections, but smoking is not allowed on any train and it's very roomy. Much more space than on a plane.

Have fun. Amtrak isn't the fastest way to travel, but it's pretty relaxing and enjoy the scenery! Check out the Amtrak Unlimited Forums -- http://forums.amtraktrains.com/

Lots of very knowdlegable people there AND you don't have to register to post :thumbsup2

Correct. :teeth: I run into this same deal on the east coast when I visit family and take AMTRAK.
