Does anyone have any experiences with the autotrain from Sanford to Lorton, VA? How was it? Value? hassle/ease? traffic getting to/from those areas? Food? anything else someone would want to know about it?

Any info would be greatly appreciated!

I liked the auto train a lot when we used it 3 years ago. We had an easy drive over to Sanford but unfortunately the train was delayed 2-3 hours:confused3. Once onboard, the trip was great. We booked seats in the lower level (didn't book beds because we had 2A and 3K) and only had one other person in there with the 5 of us. Our kids each got a double seat to themselves to sleep on during the night. Highly recommend this because nobody can come through from car to car on the lower level like they do on the upper level. The food was okay (not memorable) and we watched a video upstairs before bedtime. Book early because the rates do go up as it fills up from what I've read. We managed to get the kids free rate so it was only around $ 500-600 including our van. I've told everybody I know to use this on the way back from WDW when the kids don't have anything to look forward to.:)

Search through here for reviews on the autotrain, and Amtrak in general.

I know there are a number of threads on these two items.

One thing to note, that the PP says that the food was not memorable, that is the food in coach, you do get better food in first class (sleeper service) than you do in coach. We have gone with sleepers both times we have taken the autotrain and the food has been wonderful, as good as a good (not fancy) restaurant, MUCH better than airline food and better than "chain" restaurants (TGIF, Applebys, etc.).

Plan on being at least a little late if you take the train, that way if you're on time you'll be happy, not disappointed.

Last summer I booked a room on the Auto Train from Lorton, VA to Sanford, FL. Last week, I booked a room again from my upcoming WDW vacation.

There is alot of information regarding logistics for this type of travel, so I will not go there.

I have taken the train many times from different destinations to the Orlando area; always booking a room. This folks, is really the way to go. Considering this is first class travel, the cost was about the same as first class air fare. However, on the Auto Train you are served two meals. And, actually, they are pretty good meals. Better than airline food. Actual table service.

The room was spacious for me (and whenever I have a travelling partner). I really like the confort of the little couch that folds down into a bed; the little shower. (I am a big 6'2 man, and yes I was able to shower in the morning)

I found sleeping on the train very easy to do. The auto train is non stop (except for a service stop in the middle of the night, which I slept through) and the gentle rocking of the car made sleeping very nice.

The staff was very nice as well. I thought about bringing my lap top, but i was so relaxed from my other trips, I just read a book and cat napped.

There is a smoking lounge downstairs which is a wonderful place to sit and chat with folks. A few times the smoking lounge was a bit raunchy with folks having a bit too much to drink; that's when I thanked my lucky stars for a private room. I just go back there, close the shade on the door and look at the view as we clickety clack on our journey.

Loved having my car on the trip. So easy and simple.

Understand once you arrive at your station, there is no order regarding when your car will be taken off the train. It happens when it happens.

When you check in, you get a number on the side of your car; when you wait in the station, someone calls your number and out you go.

Pack whatever you need for the train ride (medication, snacks, etc.) as once you say toodle loo to your car, you have no access to it until you arrive at the other station.

As I've said, I've taken the train to Florida many times before, but the auto train only once. The rooms, the staff, the space, the smoking lounge, the cleanliness surpasses other Amtrak trains I've taken; and I love that it is non-stop.

Consider this option on your next travel.

Read online about auto train tips, maps, directions, etc., before you go. I got most of my much needed information before I drove to the train station.

And have fun!

Our last time on the auto train we hit a fallen tree on the tracks and never got in until 5pm. Our return train was cancelled due a freight train accident on the track We got the call when we were about to head to the station and did a quick stop and the store for some supplies and drove home. It was Labor Day weekend and we could not wait to catch the train the next day. SI just be prepared for the unexpected.

Even will all of that we are looking into taking it again this summer.

We took the autotrain in May 2009. On the way down, our car was empty except for one other passenger and a very peaceful and relaxing trip. We got our car in Fl about half an hour after the train arrived.

On the way back a week later, the train was completely sold out. The clientele was 95% senior population returning from their wintering in FL and there were a few squablles over people snoring, talking too loud, etc.

It took over an hour and half to get our car off the train in Virginia.

Both ways, we stayed in coach. Did not sleep great but dozed off and on throughout the night.

I think we might try a sleeper the next time so we would be showered and ready to go to the park.

We were seated with another couple at dinner and enjoyed their company. The food was okay, not great. The dining car attendants were brusque and not overfriendly, wanted to move everyone in and out quickly.

We had packed a few of our own snacks for later in the evening. The snacks in the dining car were packaged cookies (think generic oreos) and a generic type chex mix. We did not try the continetal breakfast as we brought granola bars and juice from home. I believe cereal and toast were the breakfast options.

We enjoyed watching the scenery until dark and again in the morning.

Overall, it was a relaxing way to travel.

I think the larger issue is understanding when to book and get good rates. We booked about 2 months out and going south in Fall is $$$ and coming North in the Spring is $$$$. not sure where the balance is.

Getting a room is added $$$ also but if it is a big thing to do train travel go the room way. If it is reduced cost of riding coach try that.

I did not sleep well at all. THere was not enough padding on the bedding but I have a bad back. My husband and I slept on the bottom no problem as the dd crashed on the top bunk. So the room will accomadate 3 and I had no problem calling and booking that way.

The wine and cheese, dinner was great, nice breakfast, bagal, muffins, fruit cereal is about it. The coffee is really good.

The novelty of the trip is great, as is not having to drive several hundred miles.
But, the airfair rate I had from Airtran direct flight round trip was a half of the auto train.

Getting into the station was no issue, it is right off the Interstate either way. Some wait to get the car back, not too bad.
That is the condensed version,
Keep reading the Auto train thread and see the photos.
