Antibiotics and weight gain

I have read several times on WISH questions about taking antibiotics and gaining weight. The consensus of opinion seems to be that you do not gain weight when taking antibiotics. However I started taking them on Friday, and just out of curiosity I weighed myself Friday morning so I could see if they would affect my weight. I have just weighed myself ( Mon. morning) and already I have gained 2lbs This is the first time since I started WISH in Aug. that I have not lost any weight! I have not done anything different, I haven't cheated, or stopped exercising. The only thing that is diferent is I've started taking the antibiotics. So I would say that antibiotics in some cases do cause weight gain! I know that this just has to be due to water retention, so I'm hoping that it comes off as fast as it went on, and hopfully I won't gain any more!

Hi Catherine - Thanks for the info. I've been sick for a week and the doctor may want to put me on antibiotics today. I guess the important thing is that we get healthy, right? If the weight really hasn't been brought on by extra food, I would imagine it should leave pretty quickly, i.e. water weight. But that's still not a whole lot of fun when we've worked so hard to get it off.

Stay on the course during this time and hopefully you'll come through with flying colors!

I'm convinced antibiotics cause weight gain. I gained 6 or 7 pounds in January when I went on them for a tooth infection, and I was barely eating at the time, either. The weight dropped off really fast once I stopped taking them.
