Another reason to fly in a day before the Cruise...

Coming from the West coast to catch a cruise is always an interesting proposition. When you are cruising on a school break, and the DH is the principal of the school, you get only the week break, and no opportunity for a day's grace. So we take our chances. Fortunately, now Alaska Airlines now has a flight from Seattle to MCO.....and it is direct. So we fly red-eye and get in in the wee hours of Saturday. We used to fret so about flight connections, with plane changes and such. Many the times we sweated it out in Pittsburgh or Chicago or Minneapolis, not knowing if all will go well.

Last year for our February break, we decided to take a break from the cross-country flight, and sailed Princess from Los Angeles. Our flights and connections went well, but unfortunately for me, some idiot lady decided she needed my suitcase more than I did, and took it from the airport without even looking to see that it wasn't hers. So I set sail with only the clothes on my back and the swim suit and extra pair of panties that were in my carry-on. I did have supplemental baggage insurance, and bless American Express's heart....I was given $500 to shop for what I needed. But there is no underwear or socks on board. The cruise line cleaned my clothes every night for three nights, back to me in the morning. My suitcase finally caught up with me three days later when we made port. We have a very cute picture of me in the hallway, suitcase in my lap, kissing it and a very happy look on my face.

I too have sat here alll weekend and worried about the poor people who possibly were cruising on Saturday. All of our area airports were experiencing heavy delays early friday and then were not taking off at all by around 5pm on Friday so even if someone had planned to go the day before, they still wouldn't have made it.

They had reporters in the airports on Friday nite and there were people who were waiting to take off for their cruise but they didn't say which cruise line. They never got to go.

Does the insurance take care of that or is that considered an "act of God" and not covered?

Does anyone know?
My heart goes out to those people for whichever cruise line they were on. You save and wait all year only to have disaster. Oh well. I guess that there are way worse things that can happen to you in life but I'm sure at the time, you feel nothing could be worse.

Here's to all the people that made it safely

I did see someone interviewed (I think at Newark) on Saturday who was going for a cruise (Princess or Carnival). She said the earliest they could get her to the ship was Tuesday. I would be sick:scared1:

After missing one night of a 3 night cruise we always buy cruise insurance. After arriving for our first DCL cruise back in 1999, 3 day land/ 4 day cruise, on the same day as the trip started we were so tired that we really did not enjoy day #1 of our trip. Starting in 2000 for the first 7 day we flew in the night before and stayed at the airport Hyatt. It has been interesting with each cruise since '00: the numbers of DCL guest who fly in the day before have been on the rise. I know two cruises back the people working at the hotel's desk told us that they had record numbers of precruise guests. Those numbers are going up for a reason, it is insurance your family will make the cruise! We like to tell people to do double insurance, buy it from the line and fly in the day ahead. Happy Cruising Kathy
