I am from Mississippi but have moved to Tennessee. I have been on many trips down to the Gulf Coast. I know at one time there was a Lighthouse on the boulevard that survived Camille. Did it survive Katrina?

There is a building down there that i am wondering about. It is the SOuthern Baptist convention center... does anyone know if it is still standing or how much damage it got!!!

I'm not sure if this is the same place but where my child went to Camp each year was destroyed. Its Southern Baptist and right on the Gulf. I don't know if this is the Convention Center but has held Student Life Conventions for some number of years.

They are having Student Life in Jackson MS. this year.

You are correct. There is very few buildings still standing anywhere on the water. Some of the buildings that have survived were totally gutted by the huge water surge.

Don't mean to go off topic, but where did you get your avitar? I'm wearing my MSU sweatshirt now! :thumbsup2

Stephieann, I know you already got your answer to this question from Amazing Grace, but I just had to say that the Lighthouse is just about the only thing left standing on the beach. Everything else around it is literally gone but that white lighthouse still stands strong and tall, draped with the biggest American flag you can imagine.

It's something beautiful to behold.

Hi Steph, I am from Louisiana and lost everything in Katrina and am dealing with aftermath now (have moved 4 times in past 7 months). I haven't even been on the Disboards for 5 months due to fact lost computer in flood, then lost my health and job. I am typing this from a local library.

I went to Biloxi for the first time since Katrina just this past Saturday. Everything is gone except the lighthouse and the Ms. Camille boat (which was damaged). There are a few condo structures (mostly newly built condos) which had damage but can be fixed. The beachwear store where you would walk through the sharks head is still there but the sharks head is gone but fin did survive. It is very sad to see this area like it is. I spent many days in this area on the beach as I was raised in Slidell and Chalmette. I don't know which area is better at this point (Miss vs. LA). Gulfport, Biloxi and Long Beach are gone (all those beautiful houses gone). There are huge Oak trees sitting out in the gulf all over and I suppose pieces of homes as well (I wouldn't want to swim in the Gulf anytime soon). In Louisiana, the story is your house is there but after water sat in it for weeks you lost everything in it and now have to tear it all down (mold up through the ceiling and 60% of population has what is referred to now as Katrina cough). I really don't know what is better, having your property completely wiped off the planet or having to spend your time tearing your moldy house apart. It was truly devastating to see what happened in Mississippi. There is some good news though in MS as 3 of the casino's have opened up and 2 of the 3 we packed this past weekend. I am not much of a gambler (I like the buffets) but I was happy to see the casino's filled as it is bringing employment back to an area that is in desperate need of it in order to recover. Many people were there from LA as we need the escape.

I just wanted to add this: I love Biloxi. We made the 4 hour drive there almost monthly before Katrina. The trips began and continued because of the casinos. We enjoy gambling. (all but the losing money part :) ) On every trip we would ride and take in the view of the gulf and all the beautiful old houses. It was (and will be again) a very charming place. We dreamed of retiring there someday. Katrina broke my heart. Not only because of my beloved Biloxi but New Orleans too. We vacationed in N.O. once a couple of years ago, and loved it. IT too, was a beautiful, charming city. We went and drove along the coast a few months ago, and were completely astounded by what we saw. I really had no idea a hurricane could do damage to that extent. :sad2: My heart goes out to everyone who has lost so much because Katrina. I heard yesterday on the weather channel that the name "Katrina" was retired. Hopefully the devestation she caused will never happen again.
