Another quake in New Zealand... keep DISer Paula Sillars in your prayers!!!

They've been rocking and rolling a lot since they were hit by a big quake last September, and another big one hit tonight (this afternoon for them.)

Paula said filing cabinets were tossed over in the office where she was working, the power and phones are out. There's a lot of new of damage being reported in town.

You can Google Christchurch, New Zealand to see how bad it's been the past 6 months.

Please keep Paula, her family, neighbors, coworkers and her dogs in your thoughts and prayers- what a stressful time for them all!

I was worried about her when I read people posting about an earthquake in her town. But I did see Paula's posts on FB, so I'm really glad she's ok.

What a mess. Reports of lots of aftershocks, many collapsed or heavily damaged buildings, roads broken/buckled, and some fatalities. Looks like power is out over a large area, and phones are not in service.

We got power back about an hour ago - its 8.45pm and getting dark and its started raining - which is a curse and blessing - people have roofs collapsed in their homes but there are mains water issues so people can collect rain water for drinking if they don't have supplies in their homes.

Damage is a lot worse this time than the 7.1 back in Sept - it was much closer to the city and shallower. Also buildings that have already sustained significant damage just couldn't stand the force of that much shaking.

There were people in the Cathedral spire checking for structural damage to start repairs and the spire collapsed - they are assumed dead

65 fatalities thus far and there will be more. In a small city like this, it is going to affect everyone.

We have a state of Civil emergency for at least 5 days.

We are still getting waves of aftershocks - we have had a good few days without anything too so its a frightening reminder of how it was last time.

When it hit, I was working at a client site - accounting firm and as Kathy said, all the filing cabinets started crashing to the floor. Power went out and we just evacuated the building and sat outside in the fire evac zone - sitting on the grass, we could feel the ground constantly rumbling.

Then another big aftershock hit and we said "thats it, we are leaving" - my workmate dropped me at Mum's so I could check she was ok - she wasn't there as she'd dashed to my place to get my dogs - we are only a couple of streets apart so met her part way.

We went back to my place to tidy up the mess - the fish tank had slopped all over the carpet and we had a mess of stuff in most rooms. Minor broken items and our hot water cylinder is leaking.

All pathetic, easily replaced/fixed compared with what others have gone through today.

On the bright side, I might make it to chat tomorrow

I second that - Paula, you and your mom and dogs were the first on my mind when I heard about the devastating quake. I'm so glad you're all okay, and I will keep all in New Zealand in my thoughts and prayers. Be safe as possible and know that lots of folks are thinking of you!

Glad you are ok Paula,

I have heard from most friends from home. The place I got married is demolished by the looks of it on the news.

It is very hard to be so far from home, you feel like you should do something, help someone but can't from the UK. Not that I suspect I could do much even if I was there.

That's what I did too! Before message boards, things that happened a long way away were things I prayed about, but now we know people around the globe and international news is so much more personal.
