Our passports are all machine readable. My eldest daughters passport expires in May so we will shortly be applying for a new one (which I assume will also be machine readable).

My youngest daughters passport expires just after her 5th birthday in July 2005 - if the UK/US governments haven't sorted themselves out by then will she have to get a visa??? i.e. does a 5 year old need a visa if their passport is renewed after October this year?

Would I be better offer renewing hers before october as well??

I think the answer is yes, she will need a visa if the new biometric passports are not being issued by the time she renews in July 2005. As far as I can tell the new passport& visa rules for the USA do not differentiate between children and adults. Everybody will need either a visa or a machine-readable passport issued before 26 October 2004.

To be on the safe side I think you should also renew your youngest daughter's passport before October. I'm sure that there is at least a small chance that there will be a delay in the UK Passport Agency issuing the new biometric passports.

Regards

Rob
