Another 'Ohana's question... what if my son has nut allergies?

Last year we cancelled our 'Ohana's reservation as my son was sick the entire week with some kind of vomiting illness, and since he was allergic to peanuts, I knew that 'Ohana's would put him right over the edge. (We ended up in 4 ER's with him, including one when we were in DW, and 2 hospital admits when we got back home.)

Fast Forward to this year...

We are going in December and I would really love to try 'Ohana's (except so far we only have a 9:50 p.m. ADR which is SO late... but I really want to go!!!) Anyway, should I just cancel because they cook with some kind of peanut sauce around everywhere???? Has anyone gone to 'Ohana's with a child with a peanut allergy and been okay???

Thanks!

Brenda

You should always tell the cast member making reservations that you have a person in your party with a nut allergy. They list food allergies on reservations, and you can also mention it to your server when you arrive. The restaurants will send a chef out to talk to you about what's "safe" for your son and what's not.

Disney is really excellent when it comes to special dietary needs.

Hi- My son, 3, has a severe peanut/tree nut allergy. Disney is very good about this issue. Call ahead and tell them about your issue, reiterate it when you get there. They will specially prepare foods and tell you what is safe/unsafe for your son. There is always a chef on hand at all Disnet sit-down (TS) restaurants to help you. Don't be afraid to ask! We have always had excellent care. There is more info on the Disabilities board with numbers that you can call. It will work out fine, have a wonderful time!!!

The biggest concern I'd have with 'Ohana is that there are activities where kids are wandering around the restaurant. There's no way to guarantee that your son won't touch something that's had the peanut sauce on it. Only you know the likelihood of this causing a reaction or not.

Your server should ask if you want the sauces brought to your table or not. My kids peanut allergies are very mild (for peanuts we aren't even concerned with cross contamination, only eating actual pieces of nuts unlike some of their other allergies) so DH do get the sauces for us. The chef will come out to your table to discuss food options with you. Your son will only eat those foods delivered by a chef. There will be foods brought out for the rest of you by your servers but a chef will deliver your son's food himself. You can ask your server for refills on any of your son's foods and the refills will also be delivered by a chef.

The food will be perfectly safe. It's the environment that IMO is a bigger concern.

Thanks, everyone!

I have decided to just get over it and cancel my ADR for 'Ohana's (it is for 4 people at 9:50 p.m. on 12/07 if anyone is interested). It just isn't worth it to me to take a chance on my son being worried or having a reaction with the others around him eating the peanut sauces.

I appreciate this board and your comments!

I have a son with a peanut allergy too. Although I have heard of people going here with nut allergies and being fine. Because of the cross contamination of the peanut sauce on the tables of others and previous diners, I am concerned and do not want to chance it.
I do have ressies for breakfast and am assuming that that will be safer and cleaned from the night before.
The only places I dont want to try with him is ohana dinner, yak and yet, any of the chinese in epcot and I am a little concerned about some of the african places.
