So, I'm seriously debating what to do with my NYE plans. It will be myself and my five year old son. We've been to Disney many times in the past few years and we'll be back many times in the future, so "getting a lot done" is not our main concern. I'm in it more for the Christmas decor and a really quick respite from reality. 
We are big on making rope drop, as we always find the mornings at the parks to be the best. 
As of right now, I have us going to AK in the early afternoon of the 31st, having dinner at 5:00 at Sanaa, and then I was hoping to get into DHS to see Osborne Lights. From there, I was thinking about taking the boat over to Boardwalk to see tour the resorts there and then maybe going into EPCOT for NYE Illuminations if we feel like it.
Do the castle lights really go away on January 1? Would the 31st be my only shot at seeing them? Would I be crazy to try and tough it out at MK with a five year old on such a busy day?
