Another grammar question

Nothing bothers me more than when big stores spell words wrong or use punctuation wrong. I'm sure corporate offices have to approve things before they can be mass produced, so you think someone at that level would catch things like that!! That being said...

It always bugs me when departments are labeled are girl's or boy's.

I see it done so much, I'm starting to wonder if I'm wrong! Doesn't girl's or boy's mean it belongs to ONE girl or ONE boy? Whereas the girls' department means multiple girls?

I also hate when you get something personalized and it says The Smith's. I guess that depends on how you're thinking of it. If you're thinking the Smith's house, then it's right. But if you're thinking of the Smiths as in the family, which is how I think of it when I want things personalized, it's wrong! Again, I see this so much I wonder if I'm wrong. Help!

You are absolutely NOT wrong! I don't know why people can't learn that APOSTROPHES DO NOT PLURALIZE.

I agree it's annoying.

However, I will say I think of the Smith's as "this house belongs to the Smith family" rather than "place of more than one Smith."

Well, if you're talking about the house specifically, I agree.
But if you get a name engraved/painted on a crock or something, I just think of that as just being the name of the family, The Smiths. Not the Smith's.
