i went today and bought a belkin N150 wireless router. I tried to explain to the sales associate what i intended to do, which is stay at VWL and run 2 laptops and some smartphones thru the internet there. He told me this would work. I got home and was reading the box and it shows the router plugged into the moden and then says you can connect wireless devices.

my question is do you need a moden? can i just connect the ethernet from the wall to the router and we can be on our way?

I know i have asked this before but just cant seem to comprehend it i guess......:confused3....thanks AGAIN for any help.......:worship:

Connect the ethernet from the wall to the router. Just pretend that the wall outlet is the cable modem ethernet outlet. It should work with no problems.

However, don't expect to have great speed, as the "pipe" is not sized to give every room enough speed to stream netflix at the same time. If you are doing normal web surfing, email, and running apps on your phones, you'll be ok, but not ecstatic.

A year or so ago when I complained about slow speed, they sent a technician to the villa. When he came in and saw two laptops open on the table and an ipad in use, his comment was "we hate people like you". He went on to say that they planned for people to be on vacation and using the resort, not in the villa pulling down lots of data.

The internet connections at the resorts were designed several years ago before everyone wanted to stream video on a rainy evening.

The modem is on the wall in the villa. You take the cable from the closet and plug one end into the modem (or wall outlet) and one end into the router.

You'll be lucky if you can get one high-quality video stream running at a time through the Disney resort service, much less multiple devices simultaneously.

I've measured the speed at BLT 1 Mbps down, which is about the slowest speed you can get away with calling "high speed". I can usually get faster down speeds through the AT&T connection, when it works at WDW.

thanks for all the replies......we wont be watching movies on the laptops...mostly for checking emails and getting some work done.

7 days to go!!!!!

Not hard to set up, but doing it ahead of time means you will have a chance to get the modem running and to test the set up beforehand instead of using valauable parks/pool time once you are there. I know for me, waiting on the phone with tech support when I could be down by the pool is not a good thing. A first time set up would likely take upwards of 20 minutes if things go smoothly, and potentially much longer if they don't. If you arrive already set up, it should just involve plugging it in and turning it on (less than 5 minutes).

is it hard to set up...i have seen others say to set it up before as well....

Setting up a router isn't difficult. However, doing so at home where you know your connection already works, and have the time to read the entire instructions and call tech support for assistance is needed will help make your trip go much easier.

Basically you end up plugging it in, choosing the type of connection (essentially DSL or non-DSL), picking the name your network will use (SSID), and setting the password/security. It shouldn't take more than 15-20 minutes. Then once you know it works at home, it should work at WDW as well.

We just did this at AKV using a travel router. The speed is fine but as noted, not likely enough for major video. I ran 2 netbooks and 4 iphones plus a regular computer and this was spread over 2 actual villas side by side. I had a little trouble at first but after signing on through the authentications and THEN rebooting the modem, it worked perfectly.

we got here today....there is a modem on the floor under the table. we had to hook from that to the router. once we did it has been working great. all laptops and iphones connected to the belkin router. best 25 bucks i ever spent.

thanks to all for the help eith this.......:thumbsup2
