I already have one cat I adopted almost 4yrs ago. I would like to get him a playmate to keep him from getting bored. I also have a dog, but he doesn't play with the cat much due to he gets severe hives when ever he gets excited (another story :sad2: ). The question is Blackie tends to be play agressive, biting hard. I am worried if I get another cat he could harm the new cat, so not sure if I do adopt, what kind of personality should the new cat have, similar to my current cat, who is not afraid of anything, even goes up to a strange dog, or should I look for a more passive cat. I want one that can handle Blackies rough housing.

Small history on Blackie: I adopted at a no kill cat shelter, where alot of the cats are allowed to roam free, outside the cages. As soon as I walked in, this black cat greeted me at the door, so I picked him up, walked around with him, put him down, to look at others, but he keep being the center of attention, so I caved and well brought him home. The first couple days he spent mostly on the kitchen table except at bedtime, or when I was downstairs watching tv, mainly because of the dog, but by the third day, he was use to the dog, the dog realized this..new thing.. had sharp claws and left him alone..except when the cat smacked him on his butt..Blackie loves to do that, even after 4yrs. But this cat is now 20lbs, and needs get some major excercise and just playing with a few toys just does not cut it, he needs some one to chase and wrestle with.

I just need opinions on what type of personality I should look for.

you might try a kitten....maybe 6 months
cats generally know its a baby....

go to a shelter and see if u can try a cat...

its easier with dogs u can bring them to the shelter and
gage their reaction..

i would not get an aggressive cat...
blackie should get top billing....

however 1st week watch carefully...
they will have to be separated sometimes...
goodluck

I have a black cat that sounds like the same personality as your Blackie.
I brought him home while I had another cat. He adjusted. But when Louie passed on to Rainbow bridge, Prince Henry happened upon us.
He was about 4-6 months at the time and Jaggy our black cat that I spoke of was about 6 years old. Jaggy was not great with Prince Henry, but he was not terrible either. They still have their good and bad days together and it has been three years. I know they love each other because they cuddle together a lot at nap time. They do play rough sometimes, but it seems like that didn't start until Prince Henry got bigger.
Recently my dd found a baby kitten when I brought that kitten in the house (kitten was about 3 weeks), Jaggy went crazy.
Needless to say the kitten went on to a rescue group, so from my experience with that, I would not advice you to get a young kitten.
I would say a cat 6 months or older. Also, adopt one that is used to being around other cats. It sounds like your cat Blackie is used to other cats from being at the non kill shelter, so he might adjust easily.
Good luck and keep us posted.
