Trip Report #1: The Pre-TR Recap!

If you are just joining me on this report, well, hello! :wave2: Perhaps you are new to the DIS or are simply one of those gentle readers who eschews the pre-trip report board and has not visited before. I bid you welcome.

Greetings, too, to my old DIS-friends who have been patiently following along for the past four months… it’s amazing how slowly time creeps along while you are waiting for a trip to Disney; thanks for sticking with me and helping me pass the time. Naturally, time went from the pace of a tortoise to that of a hare this past week and I can hardly believe that our trip is over so soon.

Many of you follow multiple reports, so to refresh your memories, as well as to benefit those that are just tuning in, I’ve prepared the Reader's Digest version of my pre-trip as a light appetizer to enjoy before the main course. (I’m sure MDF can suggest the proper wine pairing.) Enjoy!

Post #1: (7/8) Everything Old is New (Jersey) Again!

We’re going during Jersey Week again, my DSis and her family will be at WDW the same week, the Cast is introduced, I talk a little about my struggles with Billy’s autism, and we all have a good cry.

The Cast:

Ed: DH(46)(Dad): Occupation: Police Lieutenant. Quick-tempered, strong-willed, and protective. Enjoys road biking, and watching TV, especially the Law & Order and the CSI shows. Favorite Character: Grumpy. (That really fits sometimes!)

Tricia: DD(11): Occupation: Sixth-grader. Bright, impatient, and outgoing. Enjoys reading several books at one time, playing soccer, and playing with her American Girl dolls. Favorite character: Tinkerbell.

Billy: DS(9): Autistic. Occupation: Special Ed student. Affectionate, noisy, and happy. Enjoys splashing in the pool, spinning, and DVDs: collecting them, categorizing them, watching them. Favorite character: a tie between Woody and Buzz.

Aunt Rae: AR(77): Ed’s aunt. Occupation: Spoiler of great-niece and great-nephew. Conscientious, fastidious, and sweet. Enjoys cleaning things that are already clean, eating out, and listening to music, especially Andrea Bocelli. Suffers from Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. (Think elderly, female “Monk”.) Favorite character: Cinderella.

Kathy: (43)(Mom): Occupation: RN. Messy, empathetic, and diplomatic. Enjoys old movies, talking on the phone (not texting), and DISing at every opportunity. Favorite character: Winnie-the-Pooh. Oh, and I do like honey in my tea!

*Eddie: DSS(17), my stepson who lives in North Carolina, has opted not to join us this year. (You may recall he flew down and spent three days with us at Disney last year.) Just too much going on with school and extracurricular activities, I guess.

We’re DVC members and would like to stay in a 2BR Villa at the Villas at Wilderness Lodge this year. But, we can’t just go ahead and make the ressie, because it’s not our home resort. We must wait until 7 months from our check-out date and not all of our dates are available. Do I waitlist for them or just take the “bird in the hand” and book at our home resort of Saratoga Springs??? :confused3

****************************************

After much angst, I decide to take a gamble and waitlist for the missing dates. The ressie as it then stood was: first weekend at VWL, followed by four weekdays at SSR, and ending with the last weekend at VWL. I do not like this at all!

****************************************

Post #4: (7/12) Like Walking Through a Pool Full of Jell-O

Time moves so slowly as I wait for park hours to be released and for the 180-day mark so I can begin making ADRs. :snail: I toss around ideas for new restaurants to try.

****************************************

Post #5: (7/13) Oh Mike Goodness!

I grow impatient waiting for Tour Guide Mike to publish his Least Crowded Days charts. My ADR window will be opening and I want to start planning NOW!!! I also talk about how I feel nervous posting pix of my children’s faces on the internet, so all pix of them will be from behind or with their faces obscured. Think “Wilson” from Home Improvement.

****************************************

I decide that I cannot miss my 180-day mark, so I forge ahead with making my ADRs using last year’s Least Crowded Days charts for Jersey Week.

****************************************

Post #7: (7/18) Over the Cliff and Through the Woods, to Disney Dining We Go!

Egads! Double cliffhangers! I am slowly filling in the gaps in my resort switchover and at worse we will stay the first half of the week at VWL and the latter half at SSR. My ADRs are made.

****************************************

Post #8: (7/20) Operational Plan, 2007

I post our itinerary. This year we’re trying something new. In the past, we would arrive at a park at opening and leave after lunch for a mid-day break at the resort. Then we would go to a different park in the evening until it closed. As the kids aged out of napping, it was getting difficult to get enough rest and then make it to an early dinner ADR.

This year we're going to try getting to the parks at opening, staying through dinnertime, then calling it a day. The one exception is when we will see Fantasmic on day 2 and Spectro/Wishes on our last night. We’ll see how the new strategy works….

****************************************

Post #9: (7/20) Stating the Obvious with a KISS

I decide to Keep It Simple Stupid and not wait any longer for the one lone night we needed for VWL. I book it for cash so we don’t have to switch resorts mid-trip.

****************************************

I order my first pair of Crocs (lime green) on line. :tilt:

****************************************

Post #11: (7/29) To Sleep, Perchance to Dream

I post a few pix from our last trip in the hopes that it will lead to pleasant Disney dreams.

****************************************

Post #12: (7/26) Ninety-Nine Bottles of Cheer on the Wall

We hit double digits! 99 days to our trip! :cool1:

****************************************

Post #13: (7/28) How the Lime Turned Into a Lemon

The lime green Crocs arrive and they don’t fit. :sad1: I send them back to exchange them for a size 10 and order a lime green Baggallini to make myself feel better.

****************************************

Post #14: (8/1) Molar Madness:

Billy is losing his baby molars and his behavior is suffering because of it. It culminates in him nearly burning down the house when, unbeknownst to me, he plugs in an iron and turns it on face down on the living room carpet just as we are about to leave the house. During all this upheaval, Ed has to have emergency surgery to remove his gallbladder. :sad2: Boy, do I need a vacation!

****************************************

Post #15: (8/5) Goldilocks and the Three Bags

My search for the perfect WDW bag leads me to the Baggallini.

IMGP1090.jpg

The larger Crocs arrive and they fit perfectly. No one else in the family is interested in getting Crocs, so I am left all alone to "represent".

****************************************

Post #16: (8/9) The Dog Days of Summer

Somehow our dog, Aimee, gets onto the computer and posts on my report!!

IMGP1065.jpg

****************************************

Post #17: (8/11) A Nerd’s Guide to Multiple Choice

Disney has announced extended park hours and extra showings of Fantasmic and Spectro. I’m itching to change around my itinerary, but I stand firm and keep the itinerary that I have. Oh, and I am a nerd, by the way.

****************************************

Post #18: (8/14) Wherein Ed Downloads My Giblets

I post pix of my jibbitz (or Giblets, as Ed calls them.)

IMGP1181.jpg

IMGP1182.jpg

****************************************
Post #19: (8/17) Hello, Dolly! (Part One)

Tricia wants to bring an American Girl Doll with her to WDW, just like her DISboards heroine, AGPrincess.

****************************************
Post #20: (8/18) Hello, Dolly! (Part Two)

Tricia must choose between her two doll friends, Jessica and Kathy. She would like to bring Jessica, but Jessica is a survivor of a Doll-Meets- Little Brother encounter and is a bit worse for wear.

****************************************
Post #21: (8/20) Hello, Dolly! (Part Three)

I send Jessica off to the American Girl Doll Hospital for a make-over so she is fit for a trip to WDW. She is so excited that she begins to pack as soon as she comes home!

IMGP1267.jpg

****************************************
Post #22: (8/25) Much Ado About Nothing

There isn’t too much going on in the planning department and I am bored, so I post pix of my PassPorter and my Disney Binder.

****************************************

Post #23: (8/27) Making Our Lists and Checking Them Twice

I talk about all the lists we need to make when planning a trip.... Boy, I really was bored!

****************************************
Post #24: (9/1) Tootsie Pop Trippie

Blatantly copying the Bard’s Play-Within-the-Play technique, I begin a Pre-Trippie Within a Pre-Trippie and divulge our plans for a second Mom & Dad trip to WDW for Marathon Weekend. Ed to run the half-marathon and Kathy to (cough*) run the 5K. We will be staying at the Polynesian for the first time!

Half2001.jpg

****************************************
Post #25: (9/1) More Tootsie Pop Center

Itinerary and ADRs posted for the January Trip. (I will begin a PTR for that trip when finished with this report.)

****************************************
Post #26: (9/2) A Pack Rat’s Packing List

I post our packing list for November. Hoo-boy, exciting stuff!

****************************************
Post #27: (9/14) RV Actually Planning Another Adventure?

We plan to do a huge remodel of our home next summer and will be living on the road for the month of August. What better place to visit than Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort?

****************************************
Post #28: (9/14) RV Planning Another Adventure? (Part Two)

I book a preferred campsite at the Fort for Sunday, 8/17/08 through Wednesday, 8/27/08. I am in shock. That will make THREE trips within a ten-month period! :faint:

****************************************
Post #29: (9/21) Oh, Deer Me!

While reflecting on the increase in deer roaming around my suburban neighborhood, I wonder about how much “wildlife” I will encounter when camping at Fort Wilderness. I’m really much more of a Wilderness Lodge kind of gal!

****************************************
Post #30: (9/23) The Cowboy Way…At Disney!

In anticipation of our upcoming trip, I reminisce about a wonderful experience we had last year with the CMs at the MK during Woody’s Cowboy Camp.

wdwtrip06-427mk.jpg

****************************************
Post #31: (9/24) Itty Bitty Nitty Gritty

I talk about all kinds of little details for the upcoming trip while recuperating from a head cold. So glad we’re all getting the colds out of the way before our trip!

****************************************
Post #32: (10/04) Hey, You Guys!

I get a bit behind in my DIS-ing… Billy had a petit mal seizure at school (his first) and we were pre-occupied with that for a few days. No further seizure activity, but I worry about all the light/noise/other external stimulation at WDW and whether it will precipitate more seizures.

****************************************
Post # 33 (10/8) Just a Pair of Pin Heads

Tricia and I share pix of our pin collections. Tricia likes to trade, I just wear what I like.

IMGP1308.jpg

****************************************
Post #34: (10/11) The Bare Necessities

Our final itinerary and travel plans.

****************************************
Post #35: (10/13) Better Than Xanax

Having a few hours to myself to DIS, run errands, or whatever is so therapeutic and really helps to relieve some of the stress of parenting an autistic child. Billy is doing well; no further seizures, but I’m still anxious to get him evaluated by a neurologist before we leave for WDW. :worried:

****************************************
Post #36: (10/15) The Shirt Off My Back

Disney shirt pix.

****************************************

Pictures of the Disney loot I scored for my birthday:

IMGP1339.jpg

IMGP1336.jpg

****************************************
Post #38: (10/17) Just a Little Mood Music

I share some of the Disney CDs that get our family in the Disney Mood

****************************************
Post #39: (10/20) Doctors and Hospitals

We finally get Billy in to see a pediatric neurologist, who feels his seizure (if he had one) was probably not related to medication he was taking for OCD behaviors, but rather a common aspect of Autism (one out of three can develop seizure disorder.) Bloodwork and an EEG are scheduled; unfortunately, the EEG has to wait until after WDW

Aunt Rae goes to the Emergency room with an acute gout attack in her ankle and has to go on prednisone and pain meds. She worries that she will not be able to go to WDW, but we hope for the best and plan to simply rent a wheelchair if needed. She is resistant to the idea, however. (Cue the ominous sound effects of an impending storm….)

We are now two weeks from our departure….

****************************************
Post #40: (10/25) Ten for Ten

In honor of it being Ten Days Till Disney, we post our Top Ten Best Things about a WDW Vacation to share with you all.

****************************************
Post #41: (10/27) Into Every Life a Little Rain Must Fall

We are all getting antsy as our trip draws nearer. Tricia’s soccer game (playoffs) gets cancelled due to rain and the make-up date falls during our trip. She is understandably upset.

****************************************
Post #42: (10/28) The Silver Lining

We offset the disappointment of the rained out game by attending an American Girl fashion show, but I am told that it is off-topic and so I never get to finish the story.

(If any of you are simply dying to know the rest, PM me and I will fill you in.)

We are now tuned to the All Trip, All the Time Channel.

*Somewhere in here, Ed makes his first post as Grumpy 160. My DH is DISing!! (He’s up to a whopping 2 posts!)

****************************************
Post #43: (10/30) My First Homemade Disney Shirt!

I make my first Disney Trip Shirt with the help of my DIS-friend, Halloweenqueen!

IMGP1423.jpg

****************************************
Post #44: (10/31) Ghosts and Goblins in the Sewer

Ah, the requisite pre-departure crisis! Our main sewer drainage pipe gets clogged and we have a minor flood. (Trick or Treat!) Fortunately, it gets rootered out and everything is soon going along swimmingly again!

****************************************

Chapter One: The Adventure Begins!

A good beginning makes a good ending.

- ANONYMOUS (ENGLISH PROVERB)

Saturday, 11/3/07

The stillness of the pre-dawn morning was interrupted by an abrupt click, followed by the silky groove of the Smooth Jazz station. Half awake, I reached across the bed, fumbled to hit the snooze button, then slowly peeled open an eyelid. It took a second or two for the digital numbers to come into focus. 3:30am. Uggh.

No need to ask...he's a smooth operator. Smooth...operator.

Oh, why hadn’t I set the alarm so I could wake up to something more energetic? Sade puts me to sleep anytime! I absentmindedly drifted back into slumber. Should’ve gone with the Classic Rock station. :rockband:

After a second shot of mood music I sat up, put my feet on the floor and stretched. Today we were going to Disney! :woohoo: Time to get a move on! I flipped on the TV to check the Weather Channel for the hundredth time in the past 72 hours. Yesterday’s rain had blown out to sea and it looked like a clear day ahead. :sunny:

Normally the drive to the airport would take about 20 minutes, but our flight for this trip was out of LaGuardia, not Newark Liberty. (The tickets I found were about 40% cheaper.) Today we planned on the trip taking just about an hour. Our driver, Frank, had advised us that he would be picking us up at five, but he was always early. Frank has driven us to the airport for every Disney trip except one, so I knew his modus operandi.

As usual, I had stayed up later than I had planned the previous evening, packing, cleaning, and just getting ready to leave the house for a week. Still, I think I had finally gone to bed around eleven. Too excited to sleep? Not me! Sure, I tossed and turned for the first few minutes, still disbelieving that our trip was finally here. But after a short while I soon fell asleep. I haven’t the faintest recollection of what, if anything, I dreamed about, but my dream vacation was now becoming a reality!

Ed got up and we both showered and dressed. I padded into the kitchen and downed a quick glass of orange juice. It was still just too early for breakfast; we planned on grabbing something at the airport. I poured a bunch of Cheerios in a zip-lock bag for Billy’s breakfast and tucked it into my carry-on bag. I had emptied out the fridge the night before, but I felt too guilty to pour an unopened half-gallon of milk down the drain before we left. I had run next door and given it to my neighbor, Ruth, who was happy to have it. “My son who lives is Florida is coming to visit me this weekend,” she beamed. I thought it was funny… here we were heading off to Florida and he’s coming from Florida to Jersey! Okay, it doesn’t seem terribly funny now, it just struck me as a funny coincidence at the time.

Because of our early departure time, Aimee :dog: had gone to the kennel the day before, so since I didn’t have to feed and walk her it saved us a bit more time. I waited until the last possible moment and went upstairs to wake the kids. Billy woke easily; Tricia was a bit more sluggish. She had showered and washed her hair the night before, however, so all she really needed to do was to splash her face, brush her teeth and get dressed. I hosed Billy off in the shower as he hummed tunes from Pinocchio and Beauty and the Beast, then I dashed about packing last-minute items while he got dressed. I crossed off the last few items on my master packing list and….Goodness! I almost forgot my lanyard and pins! I tucked them in my bag just in time. True to form, Frank was here early.

Ed was just pulling up into the driveway with Aunt Rae and her luggage, and he and Frank loaded everything into the gigantic Lincoln Navigator as quickly as you could count one…two…three! The kids yawned as Ed herded them into the vehicle and I ran around the house once more, checking windows and making sure the furnace and the water were shut off. I pulled the strap of my Baggallini over my shoulder and locked the door on my way out.

We were finally on our way … at last! :jumping1:
