Hi I know this is off topic but I am getting desperate. If you suffered from pupps during pregnancy and/or after what did you do to finally get rid of it. I had it almost my whole pregnancy and now after and I am at my wits end!! I am seven weeks post delivery and I am still itchy and breaking out with some bumps. Not as many as before but enough to be bothersome and crazy.

I had never heard of this until your post, so I Goolged it and:

What Causes PUPP?

No one is certain of what may cause PUPP, as it is not associated with other complications such as preeclampsia, hormonal abnormalities or fetal abnormalities

There are however some theories, and we stress that these are just theories:

PUPP Theory One: Some investigators suggest that the rapid abdominal wall distension damages connective tissue and causes an inflammatory response

PUPP Theory Two: One study has shown that male fetal DNA can be found in skin biopsies of the rash. Since 70% of women with PUPPP give birth to boys, a new hypothesis is that male fetal DNA acts as a skin irritant
How is PUPP Treated?

In most cases treatment of PUPP involves high strength steroid creams or ointments, applied 5 to 6 times a day to relieve the itching and prevent any further spread of the rash. Once the rash is under control, changing to a lower strength steroid used less frequently is advisable

In other cases oral steroids can be used to help control the itching

Oh you poor thing! I had a pretty bad case of PUPPPs with my 1st pregnancy and it was horrible. I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. It took a good month after delivering before I'd say my rash was gone, and a good 6 months before my skin was all the way healed and back to normal.

I found that Sarna lotion helped with the itch. Its smelly, but it works. Steroids never helped me, but they work for some. I've read of MANY women having great results with taking dandelion root. It was my plan to try that if I ever had PUPPPs again, but I was lucky that it did not return.

I hope you are able to find something that helps soon!

I had it, although I was never diagnosed during pregnancy. I figured it out after the fact.

The "cure" for PUPPS is delivery. My rash which was REALLY bad went away within a week or so of my DD being born. If you still have a rash for long after you deliver, maybe you don't have PUPPS.

While I was pregnant, Nothing helped with the itching and general uncomfortableness. My rash was so bad on my back side that I could barely sit down.

I'm not sure what I had was PUPPS, as it didn't start until AFTER I delivered my 1st son. But I broke out head to toe in a horrible itchy rash- especially on my belly and stretch marks. I researched it and tried OTC stuff for a few days, then went to a dermatologist. It was so awful! I remember just crying I itched so bad.

The dermatologist had me try different topical creams/steroid creams over the course of several weeks, but he was hesitant to give me steroids because I was breastfeeding. I finally ended up on a few breastfeeding websites to try to figure out what meds I could take. I got in contact with a Dr. Hale (who is one of the only MD's to research medications effects on breastfeeding) and he basically told me it was fine to take the steroids while breastfeeding.

Back to the dermatologist and he gave me a shot of Kenalog?? (??) which is a steroid shot, then I was on a 6 day tapering dose of prednisone (oral steroids). That is what finally got rid of that miserable rash that clouds the first 6 weeks of my experience with my 1st born! Hope my story helps!

I feel for you - it's painful/annoying to itch that much. I took 2 courses of steroids, lots of anti-itch cream and was pretty much still miserable for about 6-8 weeks. I think they just went away on their own with time. Mine didn't start until post-delivery, so the cure of delivery didn't work, it was just time.

I feel for you. I had it with both my pregnancies. The last one time for about six months after delivery. I took lots of Benadryl and used lots of anti-itch lotions. Mine went away on their own. Still to this day I tease my boys that I was allergic to them. Hope everything clears up soon.

My wife had it.... and it was nasty... I spent weeks helping her apply lotion, scratching her itches... and now she has several scars from it... not fun.

I had it before and after too! Before I gave birth, I used a Hydrocortisone cream(low dose--It did not help:confused:
After, I choose the steroids/antihistime(sp) route--I pumped and dumped, for a few times(forcast was for a month at least of pumping and dumping)
then I just choose to put my little one on formula, but after a just a day or so--very foggy  I was itch free, thankfully!!! I was a much calmer and a happy new Mommy.
Good luck to you and congrats on the new baby! Wish you all the best:cheer2:

I had it at the end of my pregnancy. It was horrible and I wouldn't wish it on anyone. When I still had it 2 weeks after I delivered, I went to a dermatologist and got a prescription cream. It cleared up pretty quickly after that.

PS - congratulations

You poor thing. This brings back terrible memories for me. I had it the last 3 months of my first pregnancy. It started out slowly for me, but by the last month I was sleeping only 20 minutes or so at a time and feeling like I was going crazy--crying all the time and really just struggling. The itch is unbelievably intense. We tried to treat it for months with benadryl (useless in my opinion) topical creams (also useless for the most part--some relief with sarna which a previous poster mentioned) and aveeno baths--very helpful while I was in the tub, but no lasting relief. Since I was still working full time and couldn't do my job from the tub....

Towards the end it got so bad the ob was really starting to feel for me and prescribed steroids. The steriods cleared it up for me but as soon as I finished the pack of pills it started coming back. I got a referral then to a dermatologist as the ob was concerned about another round of steroids and the dermatologist said she was certain it would be fine and gave me another pill pack. Fortunately just as I finished those I delivered and after that it went away on its own very quickly. You could still see the outline of the rash all over me for weeks, but the inflammation was gone and there was very little itch. I have heard of others for whom it did not go away though. I've heard that some had the rash go away when they stopped breastfeeding.

Good luck to you. I really feel for you. Please let us know how it turns out. Incidentally, I had two more children and did not have PUPPS in either of those pregnancies.

I had pupps as well. I am curious as to what blood type your child that you had pupps with is. My child is ab+ and this is a rare blood type and pupps is rare so I am interested to see if there is a connection.

How did I miss this thread back in '09? :confused3

It is interesting, as I had a terrible itchy rash for 6 weeks after our DS was born.

But, what does PUPPS stand for?

I had the rash all over, extremely itchy, went to the doctor twice, he couldn't figure out what it was. I had been using a different dishwashing liquid, lemony, I thought that might be the cause. Maybe it wasn't? Hmmm.

Puppps stands for Pruritic Urticarial Papules and Plaques of Pregnancy

I had it with my first pregnancy and my last. My OB said it's a first pregnancy thing but I got it with my last one too. It was awful!!! I used Aveeno like it was going out of style and also tons of ice packs. Eventually it went away but it was miserable!!!!Good luck!!

Zombie thread!

I had PUPPP AFTER the birth of my first child (a girl). It's uncommon to begin with, only 30% are with girl babies, and even rarer to occur postpartum (but possible for up to a year postpartum). But I always get weird skin diseases. It's only a matter of time before I get leprosy.

No!! My midwife said you get it once and you never get it again! I didn't get it with my second baby but I might get it again??

our daughter had it for both of her pregnancies and was on predisone for a bit...she still was a mess..she even had a biopsy done at the dermatologist...they called it a pregnancy rash..some people have it worse then others...
