I hope I put this in the right spot. We're looking into getting APs for our trip in December because we want to go back the following October. But if I buy them now before prices go up
Again are they only good until this time next year?

APs are not activated until you first use them. You can buy now and start the clock in December.

If you buy them at the gate or guest services at DS, then they should be active from that day. But if you buy them online (do they still sell them in stores?) then then won't be active until you go to GS and activate them.

So heres another question if I a DVC member buy an AP for my daughter who is not DVC as a birthday present. Is she going to have trouble activating it if I'm not there with her? I only ask because I know DVC gets a discount and I don't want her getting there and getting surprised with another charge.

What is your daughter's age?
Is she still a member of your household?

What happens if I'm not there? She'll have no problem showing her ID but she's going with friends not us.

I'm pretty sure you have to show the card that the pass was purchased with. So maybe let her bring your card? Unless the CM is fine with her just showing her ID to activate.

@ravenclawtrekkie might be of more assistance

By the rules, you need to be present with your DVC membership card and your ID unless your child has their own membership card with their own name on it.

What you should do is call Member Services or whatever department DVC members call to do DVC related stuff. Explain to them that you're a DVC member and you're buying an AP for your adult child who still lives with you, but you won't be on the trip when said child will be using the pass, and you want to make sure they won't have any problems getting it activated because they are not a member themselves. There have been instances in which the people on the phone have created a "Magic File" instructing at-park Guest Relations and/or ticketing CMs to make the exception and activate the pass without the DVC member present. If they choose to create one for you, they'll likely give you a number that begins with "M00" (The letter M and two zeros) that your child is supposed to take to (probably) Guest Relations. They could possibly also 'tag' the AP certificate (assuming you've already purchased it) with the file number instead of giving it to you, but I don't know how much access to that system that different departments have over the phone.

And take pictures of your DVC card and your ID (and the address should match your child's ID) and text them to your child to have on their phone regardless of what happens. CMs at Guest Relations and/or ticketing have to have that information.
