A white rhino was born earlier this month at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Kendi, the proud mother, was the first rhino born at Disney 11 years ago, and this is her third calf. The newborn, as yet unnamed, is the eighth white rhino born at Animal Kingdom.

Mother and daughter are currently “backstage” for bonding but are expected to return to the herd seen to park-goers in the coming months. The newbie arrived Jan. 17 and on her first weigh-in on Jan. 22 weighed 178 pounds.

“A rhino birth is considered to be a significant event since the species was once nearly extinct and is currently endangered,” says Jackie Ogden, vice president of Disney’s Animal Programs and Environmental Initiatives.

Bonus fact from Disney: White rhinos aren’t named for their color — they’re named for the shape of their mouths. The word “weit” in Afrikaans means “wide,” Disney says.

Awe, how great! I love the picture. I'll have to look for them the next time I go on a 2 week safari heh.
