For our next trip we are going back and forth on where to stay. A standard room, parking lot or rooftop view at akl would be in the budget but I am hesitant and thinking should we wait until we can afford savannah? Are there viewing areas throughout the resort? We have stayed at wl and I would love to try something new this trip. Thanks!

I have stayed at AKL in just about every type of room from Standard to Club Level, and I absolutely LOVE their standard rooms. There are viewing areas everywhere, with big comfy chairs for the whole family, both inside the halls (where you will find all kinds of nooks to explore) and outside on balconies with big ol' rocking chairs AND they are never crowded.

My favorite room ever was a pool view room (for just $10 more than standard, but we were upgraded for free). The view was breathtaking!

Watching the animals from your own room is nice, but it is never private. There are others out on the balconies and video cameras everywhere, so to me, it makes little difference if I view the animals from inside my room or when I step out into the hallways. There are so many comfortable places to view all over the resort.

AKL is an amazing resort. My tip would be to ask for a room as close to the lobby as possible. If you end up at the end of one of the long halls, the walk is disheartening after a day at the parks. Plus, the lobby is wonderful. There are standard rooms near the lobby, and that is where I prefer to be (either with a pool view or standard view). When our balcony faced a road, trees and foliage allowed us to enjoy it still. I would not hesitate to book a standard view there. I think you will be really pleased!

We have stayed in savannah and standard and would definitely take either. It was nice to sit on your own room balcony and watch the giraffes, but as PP said, there are so many places to view the animals in almost complete privacy. We have been there when the resort is full and still had a pubic viewing area to ourselves. Our standard room overlooked the front and bus stop, but with the door closed we didn't hear any noise, and there was a thatched roof over our balcony so we felt like we really were in "Africa". :)

As mentioned, there are viewing areas all over so no worries there. But for $10 more a night I'd book a pool view room. Because I enjoy sitting out on my balcony and wouldn't enjoy being over the bus stops.

I know alot of people say they get an upgrade at AKL but we did NOT. Our standard view was of rooftops. If you are having a balcony that's not what I want to see from it. I would suggest the "pool-view". I would have rather stayed at a moderate and "visited" AKL and viewed from the look-outs.
That's why we did pay the extra $$ for woods-view at WL.

We just stayed one night at AKL and I booked a standard view. It turned out to be of an obstructed savanna. :) But if it had been a parking lot, it wouldn't have been a big deal since there are so many places to view animals throughout the resort. If you really want to stay at AKL, I wouldn't hesitate to book standard view.

We did not like our standard view room at AKL. It overlooked the entrance to the hotel. We felt like we had no privacy at all. We were on the 2nd floor and didn't even feel like we could open our curtains without people being able to see right in. We don't book standard view any longer.

We stayed pool view last September and never heard a peep from the pool area. Our view was nice-lots of trees and through the trees you could see the pool.

The last time I stayed at AKL in Sept we had a view of the pool. It got a bit noisy mid day espeically when they had the games (CM with a megaphone) but even that was more like "If I laid in bed and really listened I could JUST make out what they were saying" so it wasn't so loud I couldn't sleep. May make it hard for a little kid that really didnt' want to settle down though.

I totally agree about booking pool view. We loved our pool view Zebra trail room, it was close to the pool, Mara and the lobby. We did not miss having a savanah room, as we were not in the room very often. AKL's pool view at night is gorgeous! There are lots of public areas to view the animals. My mother had a savanah room and did enjoy it, but they spent alot of time at the resort. She like our night time pool view better than the savanah view at night.

Were the pool view rooms noisy at times? Our kids are light sleepers...

We did not notice any noise from the pool and we took a nap everyday. I do bring a small fan or white noise machine just in case there is noise. We are light sleepers too.

Thanks everyone. Now if the 2013 packages would open up for booking I could make it set! :rolleyes1 We have been fortunate to have free dining the past three years in feb so I hope that continues. We will wait and see, but my dream of experiencing all the wDw resorts continues!
