This is my first time staying at Animal Kingdom Lodge, and I wanted to know if the Animal Kingdom Park is walking distance from the lodge. Can anyone tell me? I read that transportation was good from the AKL, is that true? Also, where is the transportation and ticket center? I noticed that you have to stop there if you travel from resort to resort. Is the TTC near Magic Kingdom, cause it seems like I noticed it last time we went, but I'm not sure. We're going the week of Thanksgiving!

Hi QueenAJ. First, AKL is fantastic and you will love your stay there. Next, I'll try to answer as many of your questions as I can. I'm sure other DISers will soon chime in with the rest of the answers.

(1) Theoretically, AK is walking distance from AKL, however I haven't done this. Also, I gather that there is no path and that you'd be walking on the highway--not too safe. However, it's unnecessary to do this since the buses show up regularly and the bus ride is very very short from AKL to AK.

(2) It's true what you've read: bus transportation from AKL is superb. They don't share buses with any other resort and the buses show up all the time. I don't think we waited more than 15 minutes or so (and often only 2 or 3 minutes) for a bus--and we were there in January, when the parks and lodge were relatively empty. In fact, we had 2 bus trips to/from AKL where my dh and I were the only 2 people on the bus!

(3) The ticket and transportation center is sort of near MK, however, I believe (and I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong! :teeth: ) that this is not the best/easiest/fastest way to travel from resort to resort.

Here's my take on resort-to-resort travel: If you're doing it during hours when the parks are open, the easiest thing to do is take a bus from AKL (assuming that's where you're starting from, of course! :D ) to a park. Now here's where some strategy can come in. Which park you choose depends on where you're going and also the hours of the park in question. For example, if you're going from AKL to an MK resort (GF, CR, Poly, WL), the easiest thing to do is to take the AKL bus to the MK and from there transfer to a boat or monorail to your resort of choice. If you're going to BWI/BC/YC/Swandolph, then a bus from AKL to MGM or Epcot makes the most sense (there are more particulars involved here, but I won't go into them--pm me if you need specific info on this).

But all the above stuff falls apart if you're resort-hopping after the parks are closed--say, if you're having dinner at the Contemporary and won't be done until after the MK is closed. In that case, the easiest way to get back to AKL is by cab. Not sure how much that costs.

If all this seemed confusing, uh, well, it is! But HTH anyway.

THANKS MUCH MIFFY FOR ALL THE INFO!!! THAT IS WONDERFUL!!! THAT TRULY ANSWERS MY QUESTIONS! WE WERE HAVING THANKSGIVING DINNER AT WHISPERING CANYON (WL RESORT), AND WE WILL BE AT MK THAT DAY, BUT WE WANTED TO FRESHEN UP AT THE RESORT FIRST. SO, I GUESS I'M JUST TRYING TO FIND THE QUICKEST ROUTE OF TRAVEL.

You cannot walk between the Lodge and the Park.

I don't know who told you that, but there are NO resort buses from the TTC. (except WL/FW)

All Resort transportation is based out of the four theme parks and Downtown Disney.

And hi to you too, Tyler, and thanks for the info. I didn't know what the story was with TTC these days, so it's good to get that straight.

One additional thing: the travel time between MK and AKL is at least 15 minutes (see the thread which has the travel times between AKL and all the parks posted). Figure that you also have to wait for the bus--probably not all that long a wait, but it depends on what time of day you'll be leaving MK. And then you'll have to wait for a return bus and also wait for the boat to WL. I don't know how long "freshening up" will take you. ;) It could take me hours! :p But the transportation portion of this excursion could easily take nearly 2 hours. If you have the time and want to go back to AKL to relax and renew a bit before dinner, it should work out fine. However, if you're pressed for time, it might be better to go directly from MK to WL--it's a relatively short trip and you'll only have to wait for one mode of transport before dinner. After dinner, assuming MK is still open, you'll be able to take the boat back to MK and then catch a bus back to AKL.

You're having Thanksgiving dinner at WL! Sounds superb! :sunny:

Have the best time on your trip! We'll be in the World just a few days later.
