He he, don't let my poor mother here you dismiss Y2K as "it was no big deal." She worked for years on a team that took care of Canada's heath care system. They went into every nook and cranny, each and every machine, and every device possible (including things like pacemakers) to ensure they would move into the new millennium without any problems or hiccups! Her blood boils when people go on about how it was a big fuss over nothing!

I had been working Y2K mitigation for 2 years and had to work New Years Eve. The most memorable thing about it was our building being in a less desirable neighborhood and having to leave the command post for a while around midnight to get away from the windows... too many people in the neighborhood randomly shooting their guns in the air.

As for this December 2012 thing coming up, I'll be sitting there that night with my glass of wine reflecting back on Y2K, know that nothing happened then and nothing will happen this time, either.

I was doing Y2K validation also back then, but Disney saved me from working NYE. I had planned the trip long before we were told we had to be available. So instead of working that night, I was standing with 100,000 people in EPCOT

10 years ago dh and I were down in DC visiting my sister and her family. we didn't have kids yet, so the two of us decided to go into DC for the celebration, and we remember debating the wisdom of it, because there was so much talk about terrorism and possible scary things happening.

we ended up having a wonderful time! the day was sooo warm, we spent it kicking around them all, and idiot that I was, when it cooled off late that night I was FREEZING because I hadn't dressed for the drop in temps. so I didn't mind the masses of people hanging out watching the festivities with me because they helped block some of the chill. lol.

the one other thing I remembered was how disappointing the fireworks were. they were just so disappointing, we really expected something so much more than they ended up being. maybe disney ruined us for other fireworks. lol.

There was no real significance. It's just the way their calendar is structured. Their calendar lasts for 5126 years and then resets. This just happens to be the reset date. In Mayan culture, the end of this cycle would be cause for a great celebration (like our New Years). Their calendar is actually very accurate and helped them to be very successful with agriculture. They never used the calendar to predict end times. This is just something that modern day "end of world" people have falsely pegged on to Mayan culture.

I was in California at the time. Next to Hawaii, we'd be one of the last technological time zones hit. So I kept an eye out when 2000 hit the first time zones in the Pacific and moved progressively west.

Hmmm, okay, 2000 hit that little tropical island, and nothing happened. It's 2000 now in Australia & New Zealand. . . and still nothing has happened. . . When 2000 hit China & Japan and they technogically survived, I knew for sure what a farce Y2K was.

Do people not realized: the Mayans are EXTINCT! They screwed up on their OWN calculations somewhere, centuries ago. Why in the world are people taking the calculations and predictions of a species who couldn't even predict and protect against their own demise as accurate and correct?
