And I thought finding her place in college would be the hardest part...

My eldest is in her first week at Purdue University. She is going through Boiler Gold Rush, where they help the freshman get oriented with the campus, and the adjustment has been a bit hard, but she is getting better with each day. Here I thought this adjustment would be the only concern I have about her this week, but no! She just texted me a little while ago that they have to seek shelter because they are under a tornado warning!

I jumped on to weather.com and wow, those are some storms going through there right now. My poor baby, this is the hardest part about children being away at college - not being there to make sure they are ok when they are scared! I know she has the ability to take care of herself, but still, a mom does worry!

Don't fret....It'll be a great bonding experience for her and her new peers. We had a tornado touch down and blow through campus one year knocking out power and taking down trees all over the place. My first year students were a bit shaken, but mostly in awe that they had survived their first emergency as bonafide adults! It was even mentioned four years later at graduation!

Same thing happened to dd. She called to tell me there was a tornado warning. I asked where she was and she said, "Well, I figured it was a great time to do my laundry in the basement." My kid, the multi-tasker.

Thanks for the kind words, it is just so weird that after 18 years of being a mom and watching out for her, I can't protect her if there is a problem like a tornado.

And to think, my other daughter wants to go to school in Sitka, Alaska, when the time comes! I think they have earthquakes and bears! I have definitely got to go check out that other thread, thought I was ok until last night.
