I ran over a roadblock today and it brought up a lot of emotional signifigance for me that I wanted to share.
It wasn't too long ago that I went into my dr's office to see him regarding this nagging back pain I had been having. I was weighed ad is normal for most any office visit. I topped the scale at 312 pounds. It was unreal to me. No wonder my back was in constant agony with frequent spasms. If my dr would have said to me that day:
"By the time you turn 36 (3/16/2007) you will have walked two 7 miler road races and 2 half marathons including one at Disney World. Then on the 17th of March in 2007 you will run a 5K start to finish."
I probably would have told him No (edited bleep) way!
Before I started on this road of mine, I had not run any distance for any reason for over 15 years. And walking was more of a necessity of work and getting around than for exercise or fun.
I have started on this road for many reasons, but the main one was to bury that 312 pound self, for it had the ability for action and perpetual motion, but lacked the desire or will. So today, armed with my new Nano (thanks DW Darcey for a great B-Day present) filled with songs to make my heart soar and legs swift I RAN my very first 5K race from the starting line to the finish line. If you ever make it to Davenport, Iowa and find yourself at the intersection of Kimberly Road and Marquette street you wil be able to look south. And on the East side of Marquette there will be a entry drive into a large parking lot. On the South east edge of that drive you will see a small white cross with no flowers that bears the inscription R.I.P 312. There really is no real cross, but that was the finish line today, and that is where I buried that 312 past self of mine. In my mind that cross is real.
Although I ran over this roadblock, I know that there will be others. But as long as I can channel the feeling I have today, they will be more like molehills than mountains.
I am reminded of a line from the Robert Frost poem Stopping By Woods On A Snowy Evening:
"But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep."

January 2009 is marked on my calendar and in my psyche. I am Going Goofy that year.
Thank you.

Way to go Andrew!!! You look great and should eb very proud of your new self! Here's teh chorus of one of my favorite songs in your honor. It's meant fo a slightly different context, but I think it fits.

So Long Self by Mercy Me

So long, self
Well, it's been fun, but I have found somebody else
So long, self
There's just no room for two
So you are gonna have to move
So long, self
Don't take this wrong but you are wrong for me, farewell
Oh well, goodbye, don't cry
So long, self

Way to go!!!!

Way to go man. I had weight loss surgery on 12-9-05 and started running shortly thereafter. I am still big and love these stories. Keep up the good work. Do you want the bad news? They say that, "if you can run 5K you can run a marathon". Just something to think about. :)

:cutie: Carrie I love that song & group!
