An Instagrammable and Dole Whippy 4th of July Trip Report!**UPDATED 3/4

It sounds like you two had a perfect night @ GF & WL! I'm glad it worked out that you could get a yummy, signature dessert! I have said to J, that we'll be going to Citrico's for dessert. I hope it works out, b/c they have the most amazing homemade gelato that I have ever, EVER had in my life!!Better than any ice cream too! :cloud9: And WL = happiness. Love it too, so beautiful!!!!

We got to Epcot and it was really gray outside!

Our plans for tonight were to watch Illuminations. Epcot had PM EMH so we wanted to stay for extra magic hours also.

We got to World Showcase and I found the perfect place to stand. It was right by the Mexico stand right by a garbage. I was looking for a place to sit my camera to act as a tripod so I thought this would be perfect. We still had a little over an hour till the show started but I figured we could just stand guard here until the show started.

While we were waiting I got one of the fiesta margaritas from Mexico.

As you can see from the picture it was drizzling. I put on my poncho while drinking this.

The margarita was delicious and so refreshing! My favorite part was the lime but I liked all three flavors.

I kept taking pictures as the sky got darker so I could look back at the progression later. It was neat because the darker it got the more the lights from the showcase reflected into the water.

It was like the food and wine festival!! We saw this really drunk obnoxious group. The guy from it was so drunk that he came over to the railing where we were, kneeled on another family's blanket on the ground, stuck his face into the railing, and howled at the moon like a wolf!!

Now, if that isn't obnoxious, I don't know what is!

Our light pole really struggled lighting. It lit up once then went out. Then it went out again. Finally it stayed lit!

The trash can was really wet from the rain so I made Corey get paper towels so I could dry it off.

But first a maintenance worker came to take out the trash. We moved out of the way for him to work and I swear, he was the slowest worker ever. It took him forever to change the trash can. He was just standing there wiping the trash can for 5 minutes!

Finally we got our spot back. I felt bad because I had my camera on the trash so I had to keep saying sorry when people came to throw their trash away. It was probably rude of me to be right on the trash can but I don't really care.

I ran to the bathroom before Illuminations started and then came back in plenty of time.

Before I knew it Illuminations has started.

I am really not the biggest fan of this show. And this is the reason.

I think the globe is silly and I don't really get the point. I love the music though so much!

My camera was really low so it was hard to get pictures. Of course it would have been better with a tripod but I didn't bring it today.

My pictures were not great because of how low it was but it was good enough for me. I am not a professional! Still learning!

All in all it was a great show. We had our nice front row spots even though some little kid kept bumping into the trash can. I really had to steady the trash can.

Mmmmmmm that drink does look good. :drinking1

Wow that guy WAS obnoxious. You can really see some weirdos in World Showcase.

Well if those pictures aren't great, then mine must be absolutely horrendous.
I think they're wonderful. :goodvibes

I think that your illuminations turned out well, especially since they were taken from a fixed angle on a garbage bin lol And your other Epcot pictures look nice too, despite how grey the sky was. Those margaritas look so refreshing!

Disney confession time: I have actually never seen Illuminations!:faint:

But...it is on our must see list for when we go back next year. Do you recommend Mexico as the best area?

GF cafe looked really yummy, as did the cobbler!

Wow, it was SO gray at Epcot, yuck. Did the rain stop in time for the show though?

I'd definitely order the shrimp and grits dish! I don't cook shrimp at home, so I order it whenever I have the chance. I too love onions, so I don't see anything possibly negative about that dish! I don't think we'd make it out to GFC though unless we were staying on property with APs again.

Howard shot the castle projection show on a garbage can during our last trip. A dad plopped his kid right on top of it despite the fact that Howard was there, and the kid kept moving constantly! It really bothered him. He didn't bring a tripod on the trip because it's a short one that he has. He wants a MeFoto one that would be AWESOME if he won one, but if not, I'll get it for him for this Christmas + birthday present!

Hey! I am glad to have you here! You can be my photographer critiquer! I really struggle sometimes with getting the sky to stand out. I am still learning and need to study more and tend to always leave it on av mode and forget to turn the aperture higher when I go outside.

Getting the sky to stand out can be pretty difficult. Don't fret to much that you are struggling with it. The sky changes its own lighting all the time anyway. Generally, what you want to do is expose for the sky. That means your photos are going to turn out dark in camera. Kind of like your gray Epcot photo. Then it's a lot of editing to brighten the photo, yet retain detail in the sky.

I often forget to change the ISO going from inside to outside. It happens to the best of us. Welcome to life, outside of Auto Mode! :thumbsup2

Your Illuminations photos turned out nicely. I like the third to last one, with the blue. Are you just placing the camera on the trash can? or using a gorillapod.

I love the progressively darker photos with the reflection of the lake. You really do have fabulous photos.

In addition to a Dole Whip (yes, not even at DL) I've not had a margarita from Epcot. I'll be addressing that in December if not sooner!

Seriously, do these people NOT know that this is a family destination acting like that? :furious:

I'm with you...I'm not much of a fan of Illuminations myself (in fact, my lease favorite nighttime show). We seldom stay for it (in fact the last time I saw any of it we were running through World Showcase in 2011 when our oldest son was with us and we were playing with Mary's girls). I do love the music though.

Your pictures are awesome...tripod or not.

Your citrus swirl looks yummy I don't know what happened the only time I tried one it wasn't 2 separate colors/flavors just kind of beige and yucky, I was so disappointed. I am convinced it was due to training because there were literally 100s of new CMs that week but I never got back to try another one. I'm not the biggest fan of illuminations either this Dec I am determined to really watch it all and pay attention and try to get something more out of it. I have never noticed the floors in the GF we are always rushing to an ADR whenever we are there. I am loving your pictures, so well done!

Hi Rachel,

I just read through your trip report so far. I am from the Twin Cities suburban area just across the St. Croix River and also fly out of MSP for my vacations. I commend you for being so dedicated on getting pics of Illuminations. I have never staked out a claim for viewing before and usually end up with shots of other people's heads and cameras. I will have to try that Margarita! Looks yummy. Hope DBF finds a new job soon. I am also looking. Thankfully, I have always been prepared for tougher times.

I have never used Instagram and doubt I will since it will just be one more electronic thingy to get addicted to (like my computer and the DIS).

Looking forward to updates!

Wendy

I like that you will hop to different restaurants to get exactly what you want! That is awesome.

Hooray for Dole Whips, can't wait to see more.
Haha! That is what was nice about this trip, since it was a little longer we had more time to hop!

I have to show that picture of the berry cobbler to my DH. We were at the WL last Feb and never had a chance to eat at the Territory Lounge. We are returning to the lodge in Dec and I scheduled a night just so we can have appetizers and dessert at the Territory Lounge. He is looking forward to that night more than to any other ADR. ;)

And FWIW, I've never had a Dole Whip either. It doesn't appeal to me. There are so many other good things to eat, like berry cobbler. :)

The cobbler is soo good. Yes you do need to have apps and dessert! There is a fondue there that looks amazing also. Don't worry about not having a dole whip- i personally think they are over rated. I like the float with pineapple and vanilla but it isn't the best thing ever.

Goodness I fell behind a bit.

Ever since I was little kid, those tiny lizards always fascinated me. I swear to me they are as much a part of Florida as palm trees and oranges.

My next mission is to explore the GF. I have never set foot there, but I definitely need to.

Wilderness Lodge I have seen though, and you're so right, it's beautiful. :goodvibes
The lizards are fascinating! Yes you do need to explore GF! Especially during Christmas time if you ever go. It is amazing then!! Go for a meal or something.

Joining along... And all caught up.
Great TR so far, looking forward to reading more.
Thanks for joining!!

We did have a perfect night. I have never been to Citricos. I love gelato. I like just going to restaurants for dessert. It is fun to try different restaurants. I think it is my favorite part of WDW vacations.

I'm with ya, I don't really like the globe, but the music to Illuminations is great! :)
Yes, the music is great!!
I agree with you! They were always one of my favorite parts of camping at Fort Wilderness.
Haha those lizards!
Mmmmmmm that drink does look good. :drinking1

Wow that guy WAS obnoxious. You can really see some weirdos in World Showcase.

Well if those pictures aren't great, then mine must be absolutely horrendous.
I think they're wonderful. :goodvibes
Yes you can see some weirdos. And it gets so much worse at night when the drunks come out.

I think that your illuminations turned out well, especially since they were taken from a fixed angle on a garbage bin lol And your other Epcot pictures look nice too, despite how grey the sky was. Those margaritas look so refreshing!
The margarita was so refreshing. I loved it. That has now become a must do. It was so great for the heat.

Disney confession time: I have actually never seen Illuminations!:faint:

But...it is on our must see list for when we go back next year. Do you recommend Mexico as the best area?
don't worry you aren't missing out on much. It is a pretty show though and like I said the music is good. To be honest, there aren't many bad spots to watch Illuminations. Because the lake is round anywhere you watch it is good. But Mexico would be good for a quick exit. Or the Ireland/UK area is good too!

GF cafe looked really yummy, as did the cobbler!

Wow, it was SO gray at Epcot, yuck. Did the rain stop in time for the show though?
I think it stopped? Ha, I don't even remember. It may have been drizzling slightly but I think it pretty much stopped.
I'd definitely order the shrimp and grits dish! I don't cook shrimp at home, so I order it whenever I have the chance. I too love onions, so I don't see anything possibly negative about that dish! I don't think we'd make it out to GFC though unless we were staying on property with APs again.

I don't ever cook shrimp either but I enjoy it as well. I don't feel so bad about the garbage can thing. I can't believe he put his kid on the can! How rude. Yeah the kid by my garbage kept moving too. I don't know what a mefoto is but I will look it up. I just googled it!! I looove that there is colors. Oh my, I might have to get one!!!

I really need to learn more about editing. I bought Aperture for the Max but I feel like it doesn't do as much as Adobe. What program do you use for editing? I just put the camera on the trash can. I didn't use a gorilla pod. I thought about buying that but never did!

I love the progressively darker photos with the reflection of the lake. You really do have fabulous photos.

No margarita either?? Yes, we do need to change that! I recommend getting a frozen one in August since it will be hot. It was refreshing. We should take a trip to La Cava del Tequila for a margarita too! That was soo strong.
Seriously, do these people NOT know that this is a family destination acting like that? :furious:

It is my least favorite nighttime show as well. I don't know what was up with that guy. He was obnoxious though. I always end up seeing it just because I always run out of stuff to do at epcot!

Your citrus swirl looks yummy I don't know what happened the only time I tried one it wasn't 2 separate colors/flavors just kind of beige and yucky, I was so disappointed. Thank you!! Wow, I can't believe that citrus swirl you had. I would try it again sometime. It doesn't seem right.

Hi Rachel,

Hi Wendy! Thanks for reading. Another twin cities reader! I like our airport here but it is pretty pricey. I know I can't believe I staked out a spot so far ahead of time. Normally I don't do that. Yes, instagram is addicting. I like looking at people's pictures.

Now that it was officially PM Extra Magic Hours at Epcot we had a new ride to go on!

And that was Test Track. Since we were close to Mexico we booked it on the path that goes around that Odyssey Center.

When we got to Test Track the line was already soooo long. I think it was about 45 minutes, but we didn't have anything else to do so we waited in line.

It just amazed me how many people tried to get in line and weren't staying on property. I mean I guess it can be confusing to see a line but don't they pay attention to the park hours and know that EMH are only for hotel guests?

This was the first time I was in the stand by line. I was excited to build a car.

I like that this pavilion is sponsored by Chevy because Corey and I both have chevrolets.

This thing was cool because there were designs projected onto the blank car.

It was kind of corny how these people were on the screen talking about the design process.

We finally made it to the design section! I was just so confused while waiting in line and trying to remember what the old line looked it and how it fit with the new design. It was completely different.

So we finally got in the design room and started building our car. I took tons of photos because I was so excited.

We made it orange!

With lots of turbo jets!

We had 3 seconds left and we were already done!

All of a sudden when we had 1 second we here someone come over the speaker, "Ladies and Gentlemen due to technical difficulties Test Track is now closed. Please turn around and head towards the exit.

WHAT? We have 1 second left and you are making us turn around to leave the ride?? I don't know what was wrong but I was pissed. They weren't even going to give us fastpasses?? We just stood there and so did the rest of the room. We were so close I just wanted to wait until it opened back up.

So we waited and then they came over the speaker again and told us if we wanted fastpasses to walk out straight. So we headed out and on the way out we got fastpasses to use whenever we wanted. They were good for like two weeks or something.

It was just frustrating to wait in line 45 minutes and then not be able to ride! But we did get to practice designing. I would have been mad if we didn't get fastpasses but I was relieved when we got those fastpasses.

This is from another day but these are the fastpasses we got.

Since we didn't really have anything else we just decided to leave the park.

When we got back to POP Century we looked around the food court.

I decided to get something and that was their famous King Cupcake!

I took it back to our room to eat.

This cupcake was a chocolate cake with banana filling topped with peanut butter frosting, bacon pieces, and chocolate drizzle.

Oh wow was this awesome. I really didn't think I would like it that much but it was so good. The banana filling was so good. I thought it would taste like baby food but it was just yummy. Hard to describe but delish. The frosting was good. Peanut buttery and whipped and light! I even liked the bacon pieces with the chocolate. I only had a couple of bites with my bottled water and then I went to bed.

I know I am a dork but I brought these guys to disney with me

I feel housekeeping never does anything for us because they can tell we are adults so I brought friends so they could have more things to play with!

By the way can I have your attention....

COREY GOT A JOB!!! Yay!!! He starts on August 12th! He will be working for a bank (not as a teller at the HQ) and he will be working in downtown Minneapolis. He is excited and so am i!!

Also, I can't believe that tomorrow it is officially a month since we left for Disney. It makes me so sad because it was the best trip ever. I just want to be back there.

Anyways, on to my trip report! I am a little behind this week because I had to go to St Louis for work on Wednesday. I am pretty busy this month. Next week my family is coming to visit me, I am helping out with the live food thread, I travel again on August 12th, and then the following weekend I drive back to Toledo. So bare with me!

......................................................................................................

Anyways, this day was our MK day! It was July 3rd and it was the special 360 degree fireworks tonight. Oh yes, our disney meet was scheduled for 3pm! Linda sent me an email the day before that we were meeting at 3pm at the Tortuga Tavern by the fireplace. There were going to be a few other people from instagram coming too!

We woke up at 7:30am this morning which was a little later than I wanted to wake up.

The bus was packed but I got a video of the most glorious sound ever- the welcome song to MK.

"Welcome to the #magickingdom #disneybus"

We literally got to MK right at 9am! So I missed the welcome show but that is ok.

I brought my tripod, a change of shoes, and our ponchos so we got a locker and I put them in. It was my first locker ever.

Of course the first thing I did in the MK was get Starbucks for the first time ever!!! I was pretty surprised at the lack of crowds. I keep hearing how busy this Starbucks would be but the line wasn't bad at all.

I was surprised at the prices. Definitely expensive. A grande is $4.99. Those drinks are good uses of snack credits, that is for sure!

There was a huge bottleneck at the food counter. The workers kept calling people over who just wanted to order drinks but you couldn't get past the people who were looking at the food. The food is such a disappointment. And the lack of tables- I wish there were tables and more unique disney food. Then it would be perfect.

I asked about one of their Starbucks mugs that say Walt Disney World. You know how they have mugs from cities all over? I thought they would have one that says WDW. The CM said they don't have them yet but will be getting one. I would love one. I was checking for a co worker and was going to buy it for her.

I ordered my usual- a grande iced white mocha nonfat milk no whip cream.

I sent this picture to my friend and she was jealous

The first thing we wanted to do is our favorite ride- Splash Mountain!

It was a walk on so we decided to go on first instead of fastpasses.

I chugged my drink and threw it away before we got on the ride. We ended up getting in the front row. We knew that was trouble.

The sky was absolutely pretty with the whispy clouds.

Check me out- I was photobombed!

That woman was just loving this ride. She kept laughing at everything. It was funny!

Corey decided to take an epic instagram video, so he was video taping with his iphone

Best vulture pic I have ever taken. I want the vinylmation vulture!

So we came down the hill and we just got SOAKED. It was the wettest I have ever gotten on Splash Mountain. It was like a huge wave came into us and splashed us. Our bottoms were drenched.

I was so happy though!!

We were waiting a while to get off the ride and when we got to the the photo area our picture was already gone! I really wanted to see my pic. Oh well.

I had to go into the bathroom to dry off. I literally could squeeze water out of my shirts. I dried it off as best as I could.

We wanted to air out so Big thunder was up next!

It said the wait was 20 minutes but it was a walk on too! I was just loving this morning. I pictured the rides to be jam packed even in the morning but it was not bad at all. This was supposed to be one of the busiest days of the year at MK and so far not too shabby!

It was really nice to ride this and dry off a bit but Corey and I were sliding all over the bench. We were both wearing gym shorts today with the kind of slippery material so that is why.

I was loving having my new iphone this trip to take pictures. Sometimes I didn't want to take out my big DSLR.

When we got off the ride we decided to hit up New Fantasyland next! I really wanted to see Enchanted Tales with Belle but was worried what the wait time would be.

The shrimp and grits from the GFC looks delicious.

I thought your Illuminations photos were good. :thumbsup2 I agree with you on the globe, I think it's kind of awkward and cheesy. I don't know how to describe it.

I like the car you and Corey designed. How frustrating that they closed RIGHT before it was your turn. That always happens to us with TSMM, even a CM told us we were jinxed during our last trip.

That cupcake looks awesome and sounds even better, I tend to like unusual food combinations though.

Hi Rachel! Congratulations to Corey for his new job! That's awesome!

I saw that you were Barb's back up for the live thread - how very nice of you. I know that is time consuming. Do you ever "accidently" not post a photo? :rotfl2: I know you would never do that!

As for your updates.... Bummer about Test Track. Argh! So close. At least you had that non-sellable fast pass.

That is an adorable photo of you soaking wet on Splash. You look great even drenched!

Sounds like a busy couple weeks so good luck with all of that!
