An Earnest Request To Dial Back On The Acronyms Just A Bit, Mmmkay?

I quit a fb group because they had a rule against acronyms. I couldn't get out of the habit and got tired of being scolded for saying WDW instead of spelling out WALT DISNEY WORLD and stuff like that. I type and talk too fast to slow down for that :) Here no scolding for that.

I use abbreviations and full on typing of the word. I use WDW but spell out mother in law (or at least that's the case 95% of the time) I just prefer that over MIL and I must confess I still get tripped up over the DD, DH, DS stuff every now and then. I also personally use USO for Universal Studios Orlando instead of USF but that's because it makes more sense to me personally. Good news is I'm pretty certain people got that I meant Universal Studios Orlando ooorrrr at least I hope. If I knew enough people didn't know what I meant when I said USO I would revert to USF.

I do honestly understand the frustration with the abbreviations but I've caught on to them quickly. I remember the first time I saw MNSSHP and was like huh??? I didn't actually look at the cheat sheet I just had to think about it harder. It helped that it was during that party season and I had also been on Trip Advisor reading reviews and people there used it as well. I've no doubt that if I didn't have a clue what something meant I could ask and people would help me out. On the flip side though if that abbreviation in question isn't on the list it won't help. That would be the case where being directed towards the powers that be that can add that abbreviation on there would be helpful.

I really wanted to respond to this thread with just "LOL NTY TTYL" but I feel like that might be breaking a rule. :)

Just about every internet community I've been a part of in the last 20 years had its own jargon, including acronyms... The DIS isn't unique in this regard. I know it's confusing and a little intimidating to newer folks, but it just takes some time to get used to... And you can always ask what someone means if you're not sure. I know when people started using "PPO ADR" I was like, what the heck is PPO besides a health insurance plan? :confused: But somebody explained it, so it's all good.

I frequently drive by the U.S. Army John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School, and their sign actually says USAJFKSWCS. I've always thought all the acronyms on the DIS were pretty reasonable, but maybe because I drive by that sign pretty often my perspective is skewed lol? I do understand it can be frustrating when you're not sure what someone is trying to say, but I also find the more you read things here the more the acronyms make sense. If you don't know what something means, chances are you're not alone. Just ask and someone is always happy to explain. :-)

Ha :). I work for the govt and just yesterday reviewed a document that was 39 pages long and the acronym list was a page and a half long. (Plus the acronym for MY job, which they'd omitted LOL). If it bothers you, OP, I'd steer clear of any Tom Clancy books as well.

First...No.

Second...this exact thread/request/lecture pops up every few months. It as for many many years. Nothing has changed. The answer as always been and always will be NO.

As ravenclawtrekkie (and others) have pointed out, every community has their own peculiar language, abbreviations and acronyms. Disney forums, the military, medical profession, you name it. Wouldn't I have looked ridiculous as a brand new lieutenant if I had approached my CO (oops, Commanding Officer), and requested that the Air Force stop using acronyms because I had difficulty understanding them? I would have been laughed off the base.

There is a learning curve whenever someone joins a long established group. Learning the language is part of it. And acronyms are part of the language. If you have difficulty remembering them, print out the page from the link that has been provided several times, and keep it as a handy reference. Mmmkay?

Thanks so much for this link.

Always wondered what the D in DH and DW stands for haha.
DD = Disney Daughter
DH = Disney Husband
DS = Disney Son
DW = Disney Wife

And, for the record, I like the acronyms...er...initialisms...they make me feel special. :D

Although it also means Darling or Dear (according to the cheat sheet).

I've seen DH and in the next breath they are saying their husband isn't the biggest fan of Disney so in that case it would be Darling or Dear not Disney.

We've been using DIS for years since our first WDW trip in 1999, staying at ASMu then, POR later, S/D in 2002 and BWV on rented DVC points the last 8 years or so. On this site we learned how to handle RD, make ADRs and FP reservations on time so as to better enjoy F&W and once F&G as well. We'd be lost without the help we got here concerning EMH, formerly EE, to say nothing of MDE. In short, the thought of posting here without acronyms leaves me LMAO, ROTF!

Bill From PA

You had me until ROTF. IDK WTM.:idea:
