An Earnest Request To Dial Back On The Acronyms Just A Bit, Mmmkay?

In another thread, some of us are having a laugh at the prevalence of acronyms (MK, RD, EMH, and so on) on these boards.

Look, I get that there's a glossary of what those acronyms mean. I also get that this board is a text-based medium, and some posters like to take shortcuts for the sake of brevity.

But, sometimes the use of acronyms in these threads can get a bit frustrating, especially to the casual DIS reader (like myself) and/or to fans who can't go to Walt Disney World as often as we'd like (like myself).

So I'd like to request that posters consider dialing it back on the use of acronyms just a bit, if you don't mind too awfully much. I think that using acronyms for the theme parks (MK, AK, DHS and Epcot (which is itself an acronym), and using shorthand for family members (DD, DS, MIL, and so on) is reasonable and to be expected. But for individual attractions, restaurants, procedures (Space Mountain instead of SM; Pecos Bill's instead of PB's, or Rope Drop instead of RD, respectively), I think that maybe spelling it out might be a little helpful to some users of these boards.

We've been using DIS for years since our first WDW trip in 1999, staying at ASMu then, POR later, S/D in 2002 and BWV on rented DVC points the last 8 years or so. On this site we learned how to handle RD, make ADRs and FP reservations on time so as to better enjoy F&W and once F&G as well. We'd be lost without the help we got here concerning EMH, formerly EE, to say nothing of MDE. In short, the thought of posting here without acronyms leaves me LMAO, ROTF!

I understand your frustration, but it's not gonna happen. Posters have been using these acronyms for as long as the DIS has been around. There is an adjustment period, then you just get used to them (or most of us on the boards do). IMO, it is a waste of time and energy being put out over how others write on a public forum.

I find myself actually thinking of Disney trips in acronyms, LOL! My daughter and I use them when we speak to each other while we are at WDW. "Want to go to MK or AK today?"

I like to use the acronyms as trivia. When we'r waiting in line at the parks, I tell my family some of the acronyms, and they have to guess what they stand for. It's a fun game!

I speak in acronyms too! My sister is constantly giving me crazy looks and asking what on earth I'm talking about... and she's a CM!

Well, the acronyms are the norm here and I'm fine with that. I tend to use a mix with certain things, or my own shorthand (like the mountains are all just Space, Splash, and Thunder). I don't find them annoying though, and if you ever don't know what one means, then just ask. I've never seen anyone get jumped on for just asking "What's XX?" It's just our way here.

My frustration with the abbreviations isn't that I have to learn them, but that some of them are impossible to SEARCH for. Makes it harder than it needs to be. But I accept my opinion will not change anything - it's become somewhat of a 'status' symbol to 'know the code'.

It just gets "old" VERY quick typing the same thing OVER and OVER!

I've been around a looong time, I just have a new name. It still takes my brain a bit to compute FEA and ROL. I see ROL and my brain wants to 'read' ROFL. I'm slowly getting there. I wouldn't ask anyone to quit using them. Repetition is key.

If you are ever unsure of something, just ask! People here are really friendly and will not mind cueing you in to what something means!

For what it's worth, they're not acronyms, they're initialisms.

I found it didn't take too long to get used to them and to start using them myself. Even some of the more obscure ones are usually easy enough to figure out in the context of a message. I mostly abbreviate now, but will try to write out the full words if it's not obvious what it is within my message or if I know for certain that it's a newer person on the boards who isn't as familiar.

Haha me too! I will email DH at work and will say things like, ok so MK hours are such and such but I feel like we should use DDP for this at AK. I get no response for a good half hour and then I get "What on earth are you talking about?" I am totally guilty of using and loving the acronyms!

I've been posting here since 2001. The acronyms are just a part of the DIS. If you don't understand what a poster is saying, simply ask. That's easy than asking/expecting tens of thousands of posters to change the way they post.
