So, with plan after plan eliminated this year, and our timeshare points needing to be used (b/c they were old pooled points, and wouldn't roll to 2021), we somehow actually completed a 6 day/5 night Williamsburg, VA trip in a 3 bedroom condo at Governor's Green this week. And with almost no planning, somehow we also stayed really in budget, while also exceeding my spouse's expectations (he came home jazzed and happy, when he went into the event not expecting much)....

It helped that it was both homeschool week and we are veterans...I wouldn't have thought to ask for a veteran's discount, but the nice Yankee Candle person told me that almost everyone offered it, so I asked:).

Start to finish, for 6 people on a driving vacation, with the "free" timeshare, I spent less than 2K (even with about $100 in "souvenir" candles, jellies, and hot sauce) - I think my final total will be $1700ish, but I have to still tally my Groupons into my total:). We had a beach day at Yorktown's free beach (who even knew Yorktown had a beach?), spent 3 days at the historic sites at Jamestown and Yorktown, went on an evening ghost tour in Colonial Williamsburg, ran Go Karts, watched Tenet on the cheap Tuesday big screen with popcorn, hit Ripley's for 4d movie fun and a museum tour (only ones there b/c we went at open), went bouncing at a bounce house on homeschool day (again, we went dinner hour, so this was also very empty, but not as empty as Ripley's), and got 4 lunches (Cracker Barrel twice, Fat Tuna, and Sushiya - lunch is how to play Williamsburg b/c prices were a steal and portions were enormous - a few nights, they were 1/2 of dinner, too) and 1 dinner out (Food for Thought) (and ate "expensively" from the Fresh Market, since I spent $196 there, and then $90 more at Publix:)) - and I became the dairy-free french toast with new fruit sauce of the day queen), went shopping at the outlets and Yankee Candle, did swimming and mini golf at our room, and generally had a great time.

With my health, we broke the days in 2 or 3 parts, and would take a pre-planned break for an hour at the condo for me to rest. The kids loved that b/c they got the "e-time" they wanted while mom had green tea and took shoes off and laid down. And I felt great start to finish, which was a big thing.

If you haven't taken a vacation, and just need to get out...find the "less crowded" places and see if you can't enjoy a short, mostly outdoor, cheap trip this fall (even if you do "2nd tier" attractions - they can be as much, if not more fun than the "big ticket" ones:)). For travel-related news, the Yankee Candle lady also told me that the area's tourists just fell off the cliff this week (the week we were there). I told her that might have been weather-related, since 1 day was a washout (indoor stuff only all day), and a 2nd almost was (but we found the dry windows that day b/c we were planning in "parts")...and that couldn't have helped bring tourists for that week.

EDIT TO ADD: Final Spend was way better than I thought - I was under $2K, even counting my timeshare yearly fees - dang, and I said yes to everything!:)...

Glad you had a great time! Growing up in Maryland, we took many trips to Williamsburg as a kid and holds a special place for me. Lots to see and do. We took my kids a few years ago but will return when they are old enough to get the full experience.

Sounds great. So glad you enjoyed your time. Took a mini four day trip in late August to Michigan and it was so great for my mental health (just felt like such a normal thing to do). We're doing way less travel, but not, not going anywhere.

DH and I had a big bucket list trip plan for this year, Japan and Tokyo Disney... and that is not happening so...:confused3so...:confused3so...:confused3 what to do, what to do...

Since we live in Mickey's backyard other wise known as Winter Garden, Florida... DH works in essential services and has been beyond busy...and I have had my hands full, taking care of my parents, and then I took care of my Grandson all summer, he is 5 and we had soooo much fun... so our DD could go back to work, and not worry about my grandson being in daycare... So we were looking for something to do... and we figured it out.

We decided to rent a cabin up in the Maggie Valley area. Which is really a two fold trip... One of our long term goal is to have a vacation/retirement home in North Carolina, so we are going to use this time to rest, relax, and chill out... as well as do some day trips to areas and see how they feel... so we know whether to add them or scratch them off the list of possible locations... as well we like seeing how other properties operate, size of cabin, furnishing & decor', quality of appliances, bedding, towels. As well as other amenities that are offered, and I have started a list... Yep I'm a planner...

So I found a beautiful cabin ( 2/2) on VRBO... 5 stars, for under a 1,000 ( including everything) for 6 nights... so YAY... November is approaching fast... Yay...

I figure gas will run around somewhere around 300.00 + I have a Tahoe.

Food, Drinks and adult beverages for the week at the cabin- We normally do breakfast in, lunch out, and dinner that's always a toss up, ... Plus my Cousin and his wife will be coming over for 2 nights... So I am thinking around 100.00 to 150.00 depending on what we decide... I will be bring items, like paper products, air fresheners, hand soap, wipes, laundry pods, dishwasher pods, spices, coffee/ coffee filter or K-cups and what ever else that makes in on the list... I normally figure out some options and recipes for nice breakfast meals, and a couple of dinners in... then create a list of what we need to take and shopping list for when we arrive...

Eating out - not sure on this either...

Souvenirs and Shopping - no telling... this is always just whatever it is...

As far as entertainment... I am still figuring out what we want to do... so not really a number on that yet...

We are planning on stopping overnight on the way up, to see friends and eat at one of our favorite restaurants... so around 150.00 to 200.00 for hotel... hopefully less...

Our vacation ended up being a budget one too not because we really needed it to be, but because of the pandemic.

We rented our usual condo in Hilton Head for 2 weeks, but didn't go out to eat any or do any tourist things. We either cooked in or got carryout for dinners. Usually we eat out at nice places (appetizers, dinners, bar drinks, deserts) most every night, so the cost adds up fast. Even with the higher grocery store bills and the carryout meals, I was surprised at how much less we spent.
