So, we are planning our Spring Vacation for April and the airfare is quite high. I can save over $1000 if we use Amtrak instead. The only drawback is it will take 27 hours! Ugh! Better than driving I guess.

Can some of you let me know how you passed the time and how did you like traveling by train?

Also, it looks like on parts of our travels we can only bring carry on, as Amtrak does not do check baggage on the train. Thoughts on this?

Any insite would be welcome.
Thanks.

I have taken Amtrak to Florida, but it was a LONG LONG time ago (like during the gas crunch of the 70s when I was little). It was a long ride, I was about 7 - 8 and my sister was 9 - 10 when we went.

If i was doing this now with MY kids, I'd load up on some new card games or travel games (lots of great mini games at Target for traveling like Battleship and Sorry, etc. that come in a little case).

Bring the kids' DS and a DVD player...not sure if there are outlets on the train, but I'd hazard to guess there are for recharging.

As for luggage, can't help you there. I wasn't involved in the luggage and packing back when we did the train.

As for airfare, I'd wait and see what happens before you book the train. April is a ways away still and there are bound to be deals. I was worried about our upcoming trip in December when all Delta had was $500 RT from Bradley. I kept checking and found it for $220 round trip (direct flights and good flight times). I check every once in a while to see what the fares are and today they are up to $360.

Also - would you consider flying out of White Plains? My friend just booked Jet Blue out of White Plains for $64 each way to MCO....just another option to check out. I'd love to do Jet Blue, but with us coming home on a Sunday and the kids needing to get to school the next day, I wanted to stay with BDL since we are about 10 minutes from there.

Good luck and I'm sure some seasoned train travelers will help you with the issues...

My advice is to keep checking airfares...sign up for Fare compare dot com and they will email you when rates for your flights/dates go down....that is how I got our lower rates...

Welcome, we use Amtrak for the past 15 + trips, it's a 39 hour trip for us, we're from northeast Ohio and make a switch in DC, plus a 6 hour layover but we enjoy it. We board at an unmanned station so no baggage car, we tote our bags, we each have one rolling duffel and 1 carry on, plus a small cooler with food, drinks and snacks. It's very easy, there are places in the rear of the cars for baggage and overheads in the coach for other bags. When we board in DC, we use the baggage car, we also use the Red Caps in DC, they take you to the train car before all the others line up and board, all for a tip, no line ,we pick our seats and we're on board 10 minutes before all the others and all settled. We also use the baggage car because we always ask after we pull out of DC if any sleepers are available, if they are, we get them for about half price of pre-booked price and can easily tote our carry-ons and cooler thru the train to the sleeper cars, great as meals are included. Can't do it with large luggage, no room.

We take books, magazines, gameboys, Ipods, portable DVD player to keep us occupied. Our cooler has drinks, sandwiches and snacks for our enjoyment and we each have a small travel blanket since it does get very cold with the A/C in the coach cars. They usually give out a small pillow and the coach seats are very accommodating, recline, foot and leg rests and tons of room around a pair, not cramped like the airlines. All electronics must use headphones, they try to limit cell phone use, lights out at 10pm but each seat has a reading light in the overhead for your personal use.

Yes, it's a long trip but relaxing. You can nod off at any time, watch out the window and day dream. If you're a fidgety person it can be a tough trip but if you want to kick back, enjoy some rest with no stress over traffic, gas and directions, Amtrak is a good choice. We haven't had alot of problems other than the train usually runs late but we're OK with that, we get there in one piece. Food is reasonably good but pricey and the club car has some hand food, drinks and snacks for munching. Like I said, wife and I from Ohio to Kissmmee, round trip coach for 450.00 total. We use AAA discount, 10% on tickets and have Guest Reward points and use them for free tickets or up grades alot. We always detrain in Kissimmee, next stop after Orlando where most everyone gets off and the station is a mad house, same to board there, too much of a hassle. Kissimmee is a small station and very few get off, very convenient and closer to WDW. We have a car service pick us up, 120.00 round trip with a 30 minutes grocery stop and we stop at the Publix on RT. 192 with a liquor store next door, money saver for us.

Hope this helped out, we know the ins and outs of train travel and we're willing to answer anything you may need.

I took Amtrak from Boston to New York once...once and it was a long 5 hour ride; I'll never do that again.
Amtrak is not Eurail, My Eurail rides include: :worship:
I took the overnight Orient Express from Paris to Vienna, about a 12 hour trip, we had a sleeping car so it wasn't that bad; I could do that again. popcorn:::laundy:
I took overnight the trip from Vienna to Venice the trip was about 8 hours in a sleeping car. no problem, I'd do that again. :dance3:
I took overnight the trip from Venice to Nice the trip was about 8 hours in a sleeping car. no problem, I'd do that again. :cloud9:
I took the high speed Eurail from Nice to Paris I would do that again if I had to, but I'd rather drive that route. popcorn::
We've driven from Boston to WDW twice straight through the night in 20 hours, no big deal, We'd do that again before I'd sit in an Amtrak train for 27 hours. :lmao:
For our April 2010 trip to WDW we caught a break in Airfare, $717, non-stop round trip for the 3 of us. :yay: :yay::yay:
Good Luck All,
Joe :laundy:

I took amtrak from New Haven to Orlando 5 yrs ago. I don't think I would do it again. It was me, dn 17, dn14, ds5, ds4 and dd 1. If you are changing trains in NY you have to carry all your luggage w/ you to that train. There they will check baggage at the counter. Good thing DH came w/ us to get us on our train in NY (btw, DH works for amtrak). The ride down was horrible, now mind you I am a great traveler but the trip was awful. We had the last car, it had no electrical outlets, the door to the next car kept opening up during the night. I don't think we slept at all. Plus the car was really noisy--didn't settle down till after 1 am. We would stop in the middle of the night to let the frieght trains pass (CSX has right of way). We started joking that we were picking up ghost travelers. It would stop in the middle of a tiny town that had only 1 blinking traffic light. We were soo happy to get off in Orlando. We had to get a rental which took forever for the agency to come get us-- they loaded up another family first so we had to wait for another van. The return trip was MUCH better.

You might want to try the autotrain instead. We are getting on in 8 days for our 5th trip to WDW. It is soo much better than the regular train. What I like about it is that we have our own car w/ us for the trip. I am not sure of your family makeup so it might be worth considering. The atmosphere is soo much different than the reg train. The ride is 17 hrs. It is broken up into segments which I find works for us. We leave CT at 2 am - arrive in Lorton VA by 11 am (1hr for breaksfast- and many bathroom stops) train leaves by 4 pm. You arrive in FL by 9 am. we have dinner at 5 pm, get the kids to sleep by 8 pm ( we have traveled coach and sleepers), get up about 630 to see where we are- if we are ahead of schedule we head for breaksfast. If we are delayed we go back to sleep. The last 3 trips we have been in by 830 am. Your ticket includes dinner, breaksfast and some light snacks in the lounge car. They usually show a movie in the lounge car too. The price of the autotrain is not too bad seeing what airfare would be for us. the farther out you book the cheaper it is. They also offer AAA discounts too. Plus we wouldn't have to rent a car either. We are DVC mbrs so we like to bring a bit of home with us. You can go onto the amtrak site to get the pricing. The VA station is Lorton, FL station is Sanford

We view the train as part of our vacation. The kids look forward to the train every time. If you have any other ?'s I would be happy to help answer them

Good luck w/ your decision.

The Autotrain is definetly intriguing. I just priced it out and it just might work. We just did a trip to DC this past April and the ride was not that bad, so maybe this would be OK, saves us on the car rental.

Thanks to everyone.

Thanks to everyone.

in June and loved it. Way easier than driving. But I was truly ready to get off by the time we arrived in New Carrolton, not sure I would have made it to Florida.

I just punched up a trip on Amtrak and Southwest in January 2010, for four people.

Amtrak $680
Southwest $1055

A difference of $375, and a huge time savings.

I've wanted to travel by Amtrak, but I've heard too many horror stories about the trains, and it's way more expensive than flying if you book a cabin.
