My DH and mother won't fly - I was thinking of hopping Amtrak. Anyone have any experience with the trip down from the Connecticut/New York area?

Which station should we get off in? Orlando or Kissimmee?

We have taken Amtrak from NY Penn Station to Orlando. I know that people said Kissimmee is closer to Disney, but we haven't been to that station. We also have used the auto-train. We always get a sleeper and it helps, as it has its own bathroom and is more comfortable--but expensive! It isn't a bad trip, but it is long. Meals are included when you get a sleeper and there are TV monitors in the sleepers that play movies, old sitcoms and cartoons. Also, try the website for more information, prices, etc. It is www.amtrak.com

I've taken Amtrak from Phila because my parents didn't want to fly or drive. It was a 23 hour trip, but it was relaxing. I'm sure your mother will enjoy it. Just bring lots of books and magazines to read.

One of the great things about going by train vs driving is the my DH shattered his hip 4 years ago and has plates and pins it it and if we go by the train he can get up and move around when he needs to.

From what I read on Amtrak's site there is a full restaurant car on board too - should be a relaxing way to get down there.

How did you guys handle getting from the train station to the resort? I was thinking of using Mears or one of the other transfer services. Any idea how expensive that would be?

We used Florida Towncar from the Orlando Train Station. I don't remember how much it was. I had actually called the Orlando Amtrak station before we went to ask what is an approximate price for a cab from the station to WDW. The person at the train station said to be careful about the cab fares, as some drivers try to take a less direct route, therefore the meter keeps on going and the price would be even higher. That's why we decided on the towncar. There are luggage carts available as soon as you get off the train in Orlando, so you can wheel your luggage. Usually if you just tell your train attendant that you need a cart, he/she will have one there waiting when you get off the train. Hope this helps.

Cynj,
Although we have not yet done this, we are taking Amtrak down from Boston in October. We are having Tiffany Towncar pick us up. We are getting off in Orlando because when we asked TIffany's which would be better they told us Orlando. That's because they are taking us to the airport to pick up our rental car @ Budget. They are very friendly and helpful and all you have to do is ask them which station would be better. Either way it costs the same $75 round trip.
