Amtrak Coast Starlight Train Journey LA To Seattle June 2025 UPDATED Day 2 and Arrival at Seattle

Thank you for another great TR of an Amtrak journey! I did Denver to Salt Lake City earlier this year and will take my first ride on the Pacific Surfliner in October to get from San Diego to Anaheim for OBB. I always appreciate the details and photos you include!

Sunday 28 June Day One Departing LA.
Part 2

It was really interesting to have the National Parks staff explaining what we were seeing.
My daughter goes to college in Portland and we live near Seattle. She takes either the Coast Starlight or the Cascades back and forth for breaks and sometimes I take it when I go visit. It's so convenient. Once we splurged and got her a roomette when she returned home after a rough finals week. Now I've always wanted to do that!

Very cool that you got to hear the National Parks staff while you were onboard. I've heard they are sometimes there but have never seen them.

How did you find the food to be overall? It looks pretty decent in the pictures.

As I previously said I then spent the afternoon in the observation carriage listening to the talk by the national parks people. There was an announcement, I guess by the conductor for a male passenger to collect his luggage from the dining car.

I guess what had happened was that when he left to eat lunch, the conductor removed his luggage from the room and brought them to the dining carriage. And then once he was in the dining carriage they wouldn't let him back into the sleeper carriages.
This is actually pretty funny :) Why do some people think they're entitled to a sleeper car when they paid for coach?? Bet he won't do that again.

For what it is, 2 people in a tiny kitchen on a moving train its amazing. I travel transatlantic so I get the full economy food service and its far better than airplane food.

I know. The worst part to me though was the guy expected his parents would be ok with his elderly dad taking the coach seat and they obviously were not. That would have meant his elderly dad would not only not have a proper bed but probably not even have any food while he had 3 course meals in the restaurant.

Doesn't sound like that was the issue. Apparently they wanted to swap passengers and also to have their entire group in their room at least during the day. As far as I know, coach passengers aren't allowed to be visitors in rooms.

The system has changed since 2011 or later... there is no longer the extensive menus... you are provided limited choices..I have breakfast south of Klamath falls North bound and find the $20.00 breakfast good 👍 for the situation and it is a full meal and in comparison to chain breakfast not that much more. And interesting to have conversation with intelligent folks. I ride Coach and they now have the business cars as the coach assignment and the fancy parlor car was also removed and I do wish that tink could have enjoyed that luxury... having the parlor car removed is the reason I don't purchase a sleeper.

Out of curiosity, which college? My DD is starting Junior year at Pacific.

I miss the Cascades because of the Ivars chowder .. always had several bowls headed to Tacoma and a fox Island family would pick me up and I would set up a antique show space... with just 4 suitcases in pullylap and I feel so sorry for folks if they think Cascades is the extent of train travel

The rooms aren't that big. We had two sleepers between the 4 of us. We tried playing a game of cards for a while in just one room but it was far too cramped. In fact that's one big, don't break it piece of advice; pare your stuff down to just what you need for overnight in the smallest bag you can manage and check the larger bag under the train (or wherever it goes). You won't be able to access your larger bag for the duration but you really won't have space for it.

Observation car tables are usually full till Jack London North bound and then the train empty out... South bound tables empty out when cresting the Cascades because folks are tired and scenery is boring compared to the climb just viewed and folks are just tired so the observation car is empty till Jack London and then fresh riders fill it up

What is her major?? A very interesting campus configuration and a nice small town nestled up to the campus
Social Work. She had gone there to play LAX but decided not to play. Forest Grove is a nice little sleepy town. I love it there. In fact, there aren't many places in Oregon I would not move to.
Bend...man...if I could make that happen...

Bend???.. explore the Area northwest of Forest Grove .. that area is still wilderness or explore la pine... but if you a Metro living style..then sure Bend

You mean along the river? Yeah, we drove that way one time heading out to Cannon Beach - it is pretty remarkable. We got to one small town that had a real grocery store. We had to wait for a guy in a pickup truck with his dog. No hurry, just going to the grocery store with his dog. There's something truly enviable about that.

I'm a snowboarder at heart. Love Bachelor - definitely want to live a lot closer to a place like that before I'm too old to appreciate it.
