Hi! I'm hoping you folks can help a bemused Yank translate something.

In my (multiple!) readings of the Harry Potter series, I've always assumed that a "sprout" was a potato. But I read something the other day that made me think it might be a brussel sprout instead.

I can't find an answer online, so I thought I'd turn to the UK contingent on the Disboards for an answer.

So...what is a sprout?

Thanks!

A sprout is a brussel sprout, not a potato.

yup, horrid green things;)

So...what is a sprout?

Evil, foul tasting green vegetable. Mums (who might be loving people at any other time of year) force their children to eat them with Christmas lunch, for some unknown reason.

:lmao:
yep sprouts are only to be eaten at christmas

One of our fave veggies, Matt doesn't like them but myself and Karen have them whenever available.

I love sprouts :lovestruc:lovestruc

im feeling in the minority here:rotfl2:

My girlfriends sister did the meanest thing ever one Christmas, involving brussel sprouts. The night before her Christmas Party at work, she got a box of Ferrero Rocher and cut them all open with a sharp knife. She then removed all the goo and nut from inside them, placed a cooked brussel sprout inside and re-sealed them all using melted cooking chocolate. The next day she just placed them on the table at work with all the other nibbles, and laughed her head off every time someone bit into one and realised with horror that there were sprouts inside them :rotfl:
It's proper put me off eating Ferrero Rocher since! :scared1:

I love sprouts, we eat them a lot. MIL and FIL hate them though, they have 1 sprout a year with their Christmas dinner!

:rotfl: I love it. She must have a lot of patience though doing that. Nothing would put me off ferrero rocher they are so yummy and moreish

I'm so well known for my hatred of sprouts that one time I opened my secret santa present in work to find a huge stem of brussel sprouts. Bleurgh! I screamed and the whole thing went flying across the staff room, much to everyone's amusement. Fortunately there was another nicer present with it too.

I like little sprouts, not the great big variety. My mum always under-cooks them and they taste horrible.

Whenever I think of brussel sprouts, I think of the Vicar of Dibley...and the sprout eating contest she had at Christmas :worship:
