Does anyone have an American Heritage Girl troop in their area? What do your girls think of it? One will soon be starting in our area and I am really interested in it for DD5. Our local Girl Scout troops at school recently found out a lot of information about GSA that we parents are not particularly in favor of, so we're looking at alternative scouting programs. We are Christian and want our girls involved in scouting, and it just seems like GSA is just one more place God has been banned from. :sad2:

Thanks for your input!

Sorry, we do not have any American Heritage groups in our area. I think they have a website though!

Just wondering what was the information you found out about Girl Scouts? :confused3

AS a girl scout leader, I'm curious about your statement that God is banned. :confused3 The girl scout promise includes the phrase "to serve God and my country", the parents sign off on supporting the promise, they offer religious awards you can work on with your DD and someone from your church, etc.

Just not sure what this could be about.

First I want to say, this is not to bash the Girl Scouts, and actually makes me very sad for the way it was when I was a scout. I hope some of you who are into GSA can contribute to what we found out.

Ok, this could be long. It all started a few weeks ago--we were so excited to be starting a Daisy group at our school (where there are already Brownie and Junior groups) and my friend and I signed up to be assistant leaders along with the mom who was starting the group. Last week my friend got an email from the leader of the Brownie group about an activity their troop participated in. They were to sing a song for the radio and were told not to sing a song related to any religious figures or a specific religion. They chose "We Wish you a Merry Christmas" and were not told this was inappropriate. On the day of the song, the leader was informed that the words Merry Christmas were offensive and the girls could not sing them. So, they had to change the words to "Happy Holiday".

Lots of moms were upset that they were not given the freedom to sing whatever they wanted (it was a Christmas-sy ad on the radio). The troop had just been in the city Christmas parade on a float yelling Merry Christmas to everybody! They were allowed to sing Rudolph, which refers to Santa, which is a specific belief, as well, although not considered religious in nature.
And so the troop leaders have since received letters and email from the Girl Scout council informing them that the policy of GSUSA is that they are to be completely neutral in all areas when they are in "public". "God" in the GS promise is whomever you choose to serve.("Avoid references to ":God" as being a specific deity" on www.girlscouts.org.2005). Also, no prayers even if the troop is of all one faith. I just remember it being different when I was a kid and it makes me sad. :sad2:

As a Christian I feel I need to stand up and not let my daughter be a part of an organization that doesn't allow her to express her beliefs when she is in "public". I know the Girl Scouts have been a wonderful organization for almost 100 years and I don't think, on the local level, this issue would be an ongoing big deal. It's the statements of the organization as a whole that has me, and other moms upset. Some don't agree with GSUSA being affiliated with Planned Parenthood (not my beef here), and the sex education information they provide in certain states and troops. We are lucky to still attend a public school that says the Pledge of Allegiance every morning (with the word God still included); I wonder how long this will last as there are families of different beliefs and religions there.

The whole thing just makes me sad. I want to provide God-centered activities for DD whereever possible and I thought GS would be one place (especially since our church has sponsored a Senior troop for years!) One of the websites with info we were given was www.lightoftruth.info. There are several others sited about interviews with Kathy Cloninger, CEO of GSUSA, and more info on the Planned Parenthood support .

What do you all think if it was your daughter?

Chiming in...I am a 2nd grade Brownie troop leader, so this our our third year together.

I could be wrong, because I haven't gotten extremely involved at any level other than the troop yet, but I think I caught wind of something flying over that they voted to add some rediculous verbage to the constitution (or whatever they call it) just this fall. Something along the lines of religion being a private matter. It was worded in that sneaky way that you can say it means you shouldn't force a girl to share, but as a thinking adult you know that its really saying you aren't allowed to share. When I saw it before the vote, I emailed our council office and asked that our delegate to the proceedings know how awful i thought it was. I didn't talk to her, but at the fall adult meeting, she looked like a dear old grandma. SO If she understood, I bet she voted against it, but if she isn't in touch with what's going on, she might not have read between the lines.

There are still religion awards that the girls can earn, but in my training I was told they are encouraged to gloss over it. But the trainer was excited to share it with me and strongly encouraged it. :thumbsup2 Difference being, our troop is from a private Christian school.

Don't rat me out...but here's how I teach the "GIrl Scout Promise" ... I told them you should NEVER agree to something that doesn't go along with the Bible, and we compared the parts of the promise to general Biblical principals. I intend to revisit that as they mature.

I can definitely see getting involved in the next national conference, or whatever its called.

We belong to the Methodist Church, and sadly enough, we have some similar things going on there.

So the real question becomes, fight or flight??? And what do we teach the kids? Here's something we value, and we are going to put our light on the hill. Or, those people are bad, lets segregate. Obviously, I have chosen to NOT fight the fight with the schools. But when they are doing Girl Scout activities, I am with them (or an adult I know well and trust). And really, what effects the girls USUALLY (your experience breaking the rule) is the troop and the adults with whom they are in direct contact.

It gets harder and harder, doesn't it? "Don't ask, don't tell" is considered bad form and discriminatory when applied to homosexuality, but now they want it to apply instead to our belief systems. Hello, one of the major tennents of my faith is that I do tell!

We have American Heritage Girl in our area. My good friend runs it and has done so for about 3 years now (at least I think it has been 3 years.) Anyway, I haven't heard anything bad about it and everyone I know who is involved in it has been quite pleased and has enjoyed it thoroughly.

Good luck!

Have you looked into sun beams or Girl gaurds? Its run through the salvation army. I was a girl gaurd for 4 years. Its alot like girl scouts but more religious based. I loved it. I was also a assistant sunbeams leader for awile too. They do all the things girl scouts do but on a religious base.

Heres a bit of infromation about sunbeams (your daughter sounds young enough to be in them. sun beams are 6-11. I want to say that theres a yonger group. theres adventure corps for boys)
