American Family does Disney Paris

We are an American Family living in Germany...so things European are not new to us. With a 7 and 8 year old, we wanted to give the kids a once-in-a-lifetime vacation at Disneyland Paris along with a visit to Paris itself.

CONS: We stayed at the Holiday Inn. While the rate was great (179 euro/night included our park tickets), the hotel experience was not. The hotel itself shows the wear and time...chipped furniture and peeling paint in our room. The swimming pool was small, with a liner that was pulling free on the bottom and tangled in our kids feet. The locks on the room doors were a nightmare! Nearly every day we couldn't get our credit-card-like keys to work and had to make a trip to the front desk to have new keys made. The hotel restaurant was definitely not worth the money...we paid 80 euro our first night for the four us...the buffet was lacking in quantity and the food was cold with very few selections that appealed to kids. The hotel security in the parking lot is non-existant. We returned from the park on our second evening to find our car window smashed and the car searched (fortunately, nothing was taken as our GPS and other valuables were in the safe in our room). The local police refused to come to the scene and take a report.

PROS: The hotel manager was very helpful and professional when we reported the damage to our car and assisted in calling the police, contacting a repair shop to install a temporary window, and even having one of their maintenance staff assist with cleaning the glass out of the car. The rooms were clean and the housekeeping staff very efficient.

The Disneyland Park is definitely a fantasyland for kids. We were there late July/early August and the lines were not too terrible. Lines are shorter before lunch and around dinner time. If you want to see the Lion King show, be sure to line up early to get your tickets to the show. At 3pm they distribute tickets to the 4pm and 5 pm shows, and again at 7:30pm for the evening shows. I got in line at 2:30 to get our tickets. My only advice to Disney would be to offer non-sugar and healthier snack choices in their cafes and restaurants...even fresh fruit would be a welcome alternative.

I'd second that .

Sorry about this hassle with your car. It was very poor of the police not to get involved. Glad you enjoyed the park. :cloud9:

Very interesting to hear your views of HI, we've got 2 nights booked there in a few weeks. Good prices though, if you can ignore the rest of it.

Sorry to hear about the car. Agree wholeheartedly about the fresh fruit & healthier choices.

Did you enjoy the holiday overall?

Yes, overall we had a great time! If you have the time, hop the train (station is very convenient in the Disney Village) into Paris and do some sightseeing there. It's about a 30 minute ride.

Cheers

Thanks for your thoughts on the Holiday Inn - very poor show about the car break in. :sad2: Glad you enjoyed your holiday overall though :goodvibes

And welcome to the DIS

Sorry to hear about your poor experience. We tend to use transport so we've got an easy ride.

Welcome to the DIS Yooper Family, what a terrible experience with your car, how dreadful that the police wouldn't come out. :sad2:

I hope it didn't detract from your holiday too much and that you still managed to enjoy yourselves. :)

Thanks for sharing. Dispite the setbacks, I hope the kids had a good time.

You may already know this but there is a fresh fruit stand daily in Adventureland by the (closed) hakuna matata restaurant -- I know this isn't in a cafe/restaurant, but a good place to stop by if you go again in the future and need a break from all the donuts & chocolate!

You're welcome!
I'm not sure if they only do it in the summer (it was certainly there several weeks ago when I was there, and last year at the same time), but since you're going soon I'm sure it'll be there then as well - it's a cart which sells apples, bananas, watermelons etc.

I recognise the situation with the police.
I’m often in France for my work. Last year I went shopping with a friend and she was hit by a French car. We stood still. When we called the police we got as an answer:" you should have stayed in Holland".
They din`t bother to come. !!!

:) we are also an american family in europe and am going ther in a month and staying at that hotel...thanks for the info! (sorry about your car)

Sorry to hear about your car, but I'm not surprised to hear about the french cops at all. We had our videocamera stolen going through CDG, and when we attempted to report it by phone when we got home [when we discovered the theft], they hung up on us every time as soon as they realised we weren't french! I just hope it doesn't affect my insurance claim!

We stay in the Holiday Inn a lot and last time was the first time I have used the pool...also found the flexible pool lining a bit bizarre. We have never eaten there outside of breakfast so I can't comment on the food on offer, but the breakfast buffet is great. We also find the rooms to be excellent value for the rate. Sorry to hear about your car break in and the attitude of the French police!

we were their in mid July as well and cant differ on your criticism, They were severely understaffed, kept giving us keycards that didnt work and basically treated me like an idiot because I couldnt get them to work. The hotel is situated in a terrible spot for catching the bus as its the last stop for pick up/drop off and the bus drivers leave much to be desired. That said the rooms were fun for the kids, they loved the bunkbeds, the bfast buffet was ample if unimpressive and the rate was fantastic.

I thought it was compulsary to report any crime to the police for insurance claims. That is disgusting attitude. I hope our car will be ok. We are camping and will be parking in the Disney parks.

From what I hear the french cops are ready to fine the brits if they dont have the essentials i.e. lights pointed the other way, first aid kit, spare bulbs, triangle, GB sticker etc... but they wont help people in need :furious: :sad2:
