Summary: American Airlines instituted a policy earlier this year to limit the weight of mobiity devices and wheelchairs on some of their small regional jets. They set the limit at 300 pounds, which many power wheelchairs with batteries/motors exceed. This prevented people with such wheelchairs from flying some routes.
After getting feedback American reviewed its policy and has increased the weight limit. There is detail about the new weight limits in this article.
