I went to the beauty salon with my sister on Friday to pick up her wig. She started her chemo treatments earlier in the week and was told she'd lose her hair within two weeks.
So, aside from the trauma of having to try on the wig that she ordered, my sister held it all together until it was time to pay.
She was told by the owner of the shop and our stylist that the wig had been taken care of and she didn't owe anything. My sister thought it was the stylists who had paid for it, but they said it wasn't them.
Here is how kind some people are: a woman who was sitting in the owner's chair was talking with the owner about how she had to order wigs for 3 customers. She said she's never had to order so many wigs in one week before. The woman asked which of the women needed help paying for the wig. The owner told her that each of the women could afford it. One was not more needy than the others. So the woman asked for a brief summary of the women who needed the wigs, age, children, etc.
When she was told that my sister is 34 and has two children under 5, she said that she wanted to buy my sister's wig for her. She said that each Lent, she does something kind for someone and she wanted this purchase to be the kind thing she does. She only had two caveats: she doesn't want to know who got the wig and she doesn't want that woman to know who she is.
So, when my sister heard that, she started crying. Everyone else started crying. I hope that kind woman can know just how touched my sister was by this act of charity for a stranger.
My family has vowed that we will begin to also act like this woman in future Lenten periods. It will mean so much more to another person than giving up chocolate, etc.
