So I just saw this article quoted on facebook, that has the CEO of AMAWaterways saying that they are planning on expanding their ABD departures to include the Rhine river in 2017:

Schreiner: Every year we’re adding two ships in Europe and maybe one elsewhere. This year we started our partnership with Backroads to provide guided bicycle tours, which have been very successful. Our Adventures by Disney partnership will start next summer on the AmaViola, they’ve pretty much sold out all their departures; they’ll have seven departures in 2016 and will expand from the Danube to the Rhine as well in 2017.

I hope they add a December holiday markets sailing on the Rhine. We are planning to do a European Christmas markets river cruise in 2017, and it would be nice to have another option to choose from. We aren't as excited about the existing ABD holiday Danube river cruise itinerary because it repeats a lot of what we did on our Austria, Germany & Czech Republic ABD.

They (most of the river cruise lines) basically sail the same routes. Tauck does a Bridges river cruise now that starts in Basil and ends in Amsterdam. At some towns on our Danube cruise we were lashed together and had to cross through a couple other cruise ships to get to the pier. We also would like to do a Christmas markets cruise in Europe also Calfan. We went to Quebec City, Canada this past Thanksgiving to experience their Christmas markets that they set up in the old city. It gave us a little taste of Europe close to where we live. Great restaurants in Quebec City and the people are very welcoming.

I wonder if they will include the extra days in Lucerne and Zurich. Lucerne is very pretty, extremely busy with tourists though when we were there. The Zurich airport was crazy too when we flew from there. I guess it must have been a busy time.

That will be one thing we'll consider....

tufbuf, what time of year were you there? We'll be in Lucerne in the middle of July next year, after our river cruise from Amsterdam to Basel. We'll be on our own for those days, so it will be good to have an idea how many tourists are there that time of year. I'm assuming there will be a lot.

I would love to do a River Cruise and while I understand the fare upcharge for traveling solo the river cruises account for the exursions as well and I won't pay twice for excursions, and ABD does that.

Oh, I agree. The only reason I'm going with ABD is because they ran a special when they first announced them for a 50% single supplement on the class "C" cabins. There was no way in heck I was paying 200% for that cruise! I don't really understand why they did it that way (200%) when they don't do that for the regular cruise add-ons.

This sounds very interesting.

Will look forward to seeing the itinerary when it is released.
