Amateur tent campers will forget...

As the title implies, we (DS and myself) are amateur tent campers (total camping nights are less than 7). We are heading out in a few days (no, not to WDW) and I am finalizing our packing list.

What are those "easily forgotten but needed" items that rookie campers are apt to forget?? When we camped in the past I didn't worry too much because we never went far from home.... but this time we are heading over the border into Canada and I won't be able to head home if I forgot something! And it is a budget trip.... I can't afford to waste $$ buying something I have sitting at home!

Extension cords, 6 way outlet, rugs..... forgot them last year, regretted it. Bug spray....

Things we took this year and were very thankfull....

A big tarp to cover tent.... lots of extra ropes and stakes for tarp....

PLAN ON RAIN!!

A roll of duct tape, for all sorts of repairs. And an extra layer of clothes of sleep in, in case it gets chilly at night. Oh yeah, and pillows - done that - not fun trying to sleep on a rolled up sweatshirt.

Thanks for the response. We are very basic campers don't bring anything electrical, so we won't need the extension cords, but I will pick up an extra tarp while I am out today. I assumed that the rain fly was enough, but an extra cover won't hurt!! We have "tried" to camp in the rain and it was NO fun! Tent leaked (I didn't know anything about seam sealing), fire wouldn't start... after being wet, cold, hungry and frustrated for a few hours we literally SHOVED all of the wet muddy equipment in the car (new car... two weeks old, now full of water and mud) and went home. We just weren't prepared to camp in the rain.

Fast forward to this year.... new tent with sealed seams and Scotch-guarded. Better plans to deal with bad weather, etc. And HOPEFULLY good weather on the horizon. Should be better! Thanks again for your response................P

So...you may want to reconsider the 'nothing electrical' idea. All the camps have electricity, I believe, don't they?

Pjlla - I missed it before that you're up here in New England too! Where are you headed camping? Lots of great campgrounds and state parks up in our neck of the woods, that's for sure. We just spent a great weekend at Silver Lake SP in VT last weekend. Rained a bit, but as you know now - it isn't so bad when you're prepared for it.

We are heading into Montreal to visit Parc Safari. It looks like it will be fun. We got a mailer last year and DS has been wanting to check it out for Mother/Son weekend ever since! Once I got the "border crossing" issues cleared up (i.e. passport or no passport, what can you carry over, etc), we were all set to start (last minute) planning! Right now we are trying to get the car loaded, but we just had a HUGE hail storm with rain like Noah must have seen . And the garage is full of camping stuff that we had to move quickly in order to pull the car in to avoid hail damage! Once the rain stops I will move the car out again, turn it around to back in, and we can get it the car loaded up. The only things left to pack are our clothes, towels, etc. All of the "camp" gear is set and waiting (I think!!). Thanks for asking.....................P

Thanks for all of the ideas. I did pack a hammer for the tent stakes, etc, but I am leary of packing a hatchet.... the border crossing information I read was VERY SPECIFIC about anything that could be considered a weapon. Don't want to raise a red flag and have any troubles................P

Weather radio. It only takes one night in straight-line winds and tornado warnings from out of nowhere to realize the money for one is well spent.

Have Fun!! Money for showers. In America most camping facilities charge 50 cents to $1.00 to take a shower. Garbage bags to put trash in. Rope for clothes line or to hang a tarp over your tent.
