Yesterday I was leaving my grocery store and I noticed an employee emptyign their outside trash cans - into one of thier carts! The garbage was spilling over into the cart - all I could think was that someone's baby might sit in that cart later or that my food could be in it

so I called the store when I got home and told the girl who answered the phone what I saw - she said "Yeah" - like what's your point - I asked if this was normal and she said - that is how we empty our garbage - they line the cart with plastic and gather the trash - I told her there was no layer of plastic in the cart - she told me she would pass my concerns on to the manager - I told her that if that was the normal procedure for handling trash in their store -I would no longer be shopping there

Does anyone else find that utterly repulsive?

EWWWWWWWWWWW!! You should call back and talk to the manager. You might also want to contact your local health department.

Gross gross gross!!
I'm glad I registered for one of those shopping cart covers for my son. Don't want to think of what is all over the carts! :faint:  :faint:  :faint:

The girl seemed so non-plussed by what I told her that I was worried that I was overreacting!! I am so glad you all agree - I am going to contact their corporate offices and if I don't hear from them - I will contact the health department

I wonder if all of their chains do this - it was a Kroger store

I've noticed that our local grocery stores now have the lysol wipes or store brand equivalents for use on the carts at the front.

Grocerty carts are gross anyway if you consider how many people come in with colds who wipe their noses and then touch the handles. Then they put the meat which leaks all over the basket and doesn't get cleaned, and the milk jugs that leak. If you think about how much different types of food products go into the cart each day and aren't disinfected I don't see any difference between that and using it for the trash.

To quote various Peanuts characters -- BLEAH!!!!!

What, they don't have one of those heavy rolling bins for trash collection? I know I've seen the cleaning crews use them at the malls and I remember one at the McDonalds I worked at way back when.

I would call the store today, ask for the store manager, and find out if the person you spoke with made them aware of it. If the manager is going to take steps to change that procedure, great. If the manager's reaction is like the employee's, then I'd be contacting the district manager as well as the Health Department.

I hope not all Kroger stores do this because I shop at King Soopers all the time, that is so nasty.

Well, I don't know if this is the case at your grocery store, but mine has some carts that they use just for things like this. I can tell because they replaced the carts recently, and the ones I see them use are the old style. I would think that maybe (hopefully) they have carts they use expressly for this purpose.

If this is the case though, it would have been nice if the girl you talked to had said that.

Many moons ago when I worked at a store that had carts, we had the same thing. I hope that is the case with this store.

That's repulsive! If they want to take out the garbage that way, they should have a cart that is only for that purpose.

And DH doesn't understand why I feel the need to bag one red pepper :)

That is gross.
The major store in our town has the dirtiest hand baskets. I feel like my hands and food is filthy when it gets home.

This is why I always wash my watermelons before I cut them!!
And my bananas! And things that you don't even eat the peels/skins on.
Because they are soooo dirty!
