Am I the only one to not get my kids Disney $$??

I am a DISNEY NUT, but I just don't get the idea of tying up cash in Disney dollars. Goodness knows we spend enough there and the thought of pre-giving them more is a little scary! I encourage my kids to save their money and if there is something they really want while we are at the World, they may use it. If all they had were Disney $$, how could I encourage them to save them for something special outside of Disney? I think cash also encourages them to come home with a little something in their pocket because the thought of using it somewhere else along the line is also appealing. Sheesh- am I am traitor or something?? LOL

Nope, you're not alone. I have never given my daughter Disney Dollars. I have never held a Disney Dollar in my hand!

Maybe when she was younger she might have gotten a thrill out of it, but definately not now! She'd rather have a Visa gift card!

weve never bought them either. sure theyre cute, but we arent interested. when my daughter heard about them she did ask that i get her some. i told her she was more than welcome to buy some with her money, her response "are they worth more than i buy them for" (me)"nope, dollar for dollar" (her) "oh, ill just keep real money"

so i guess that says it all.

i would however consider giving them as a gift to someone going to disney.

I don't think you need to give your kids disney dollars either. we gave our girls $5 in disney dollars when we told them we were going...was that all they were alowed to spend? Heck no! that was just a fun way for us to tell them we were going to disney.

I prefer to have them save their money to do with whatever they wish however being 7 and 4 they don't get alot anyhow. Their nana gave them each $100 to spend while on our trip. she knew we'd be there for 6 days so the girls had a certain amount to spend each day or they could save it and spend it all on something big. they spent $20 per day for the first 5 and we kicked in an extra $20 for them on our shopping day and since we went to a different park each day of our stay it worked out they bought something from each park as a souvineer. it taught my dd 7 the value of her money and by the end of our trip she knew if she picked a few things that were a couple dollars each she could get way more things...she liked that idea lol...

We asked our kids, (dd17, dd12 and dd12) if they wanted Disney Dollars or real dollars for doing their chores. They all wanted disney dollars to spend while at disney. We didn't go overboard with them, we mixed it with real money also so they did not feel they had to spend all their money in one place.

We gave our kids "Disney Dollars" as part of their birthday presents this year, but it ended up being actual cash that they can spend at Disney (our Disney Store closed so I didn't buy the actual Disney Dollars). The same thing happened with family who wanted to give them Disney spending money.

DD#1 now earns money babysitting, but she is required to save half of everything she makes, so she won't be taking buckets of money with her in 30 days.

I was born and raised in Florida, close to WDW with frequent visits at least 3x a year. My parents never gave me Disney dollars, I never knew about them (I don't think they did either) and I hadn't even seen one till a couple of days ago when my fiance showed me his from 1990.

I get Disney Dollars--not for the kids, but for DH. It is his spending $ while in the parks. I buy a little bit throughout the year. It works for him. If he had US$, he would spend them at home, then not have any spending $ for WDW. This way he is "forced" to save his spending $.

I do the same thing. I try to toss extra singles and change in a bank whenever I clean out my pockets. When it gets to a sufficient amount, or if Im going to the mall, Ill buy Disney Dollars or a gift card. I figure it's pretty easy to snag $ out of the jar to blow on something stupid but the Disney Dollars aren't as easy to blow.
DS will ask to buy Disney Dollars for the same reason.
By doing this, I have $250 in gift cards and $230 in Disney Dollars. DS has $125.
I still have 4 months until the trip, so I should be able to come up with a couple hundred more.

I didn't GIVE my kids disney dollars. It is our first trip to Disney for all of us. The kids are 8, 6, and 5. They were GIVEN disney dollars throughout the year as gifts from grandparents. They also have chores that they do everyday and earn money for. They will be taking that money also. The disney dollars are something different and exciting for them. At least is was for my kids. But like I said, it is their "FIRST" trip!! Maybe it would be different if they have already been there 50 times. JMHO!

I personally had never HEARD of Disney dollars until I started reading the Disboards. And while I have not made as many Disney trips as some, my first was February 1972. So I have known about Disney and WDW for a LONG time.
I actually have the program/map from Feb 72 that I found when I was going through stuff at my father's house after he died.

I have never purchased any Disney dollars, but my son is planning to spend the $50 I got in Disney dollars from Sunshine Rewards. I told him to be sure to spend that first since he can't spend it at home. Other than that we are just taking good ol' cash.

I don't do them either. Haven't even told my daughter they existed! She's young and still learning about money. I am just afraid she will not see it as money and lose it. Or not spend it bc it's one of her many collections. In which case I am spending more money!

That said, we do arrive at Disney armed with some D$ from my doing rewards programs.

You're not missing out on something by not buying them. They're cute and your kids won't want to spend them...but they are REAL MONEY and I DO spend mine.

I just give my kids cash that way they can spend it how and where they would like. We drive down and stop at a few different spots that way they can do what they would like with it.

We do the same. We are going for his B'day, he has said he does not want presents he wants Disney $$. So we have given him ways of earning them and told family & friends that Disney $$ would make a nice gift come Nov for his b'day

You can exchange any of your Disney dollars for cash at the parks or any resort. We plan to cash out any left over $$ on our last day and put it in next years disney fund.
