Am I missing something? Tenderloin is a good cut of beef, correct? So why...

is it so cheap in wisconsin? We live in Ilinois about 20 minutes northwest of chicago. Beef tenderloin at the jewel store is usualy $16 a pound. So we get hamburger or chicken, heheheheee.

But we are visiting Mom today, she lives about 10 miles into wisconsin. $3.99 a pound! OK that is for a whole one, not cut into filets and not trimmed of fat a silver skin stuff. The skirt steak there was $4.99! By us it is $7-8 per pound!
So what does wisconisin know about tenderloins?

that and gas was about 60-70 cents cheaper. It is about an hour drive but only an 1/8 tank of gas. Now it is even economical to vist mom n dad. WHat excuses do I have left.

Hmm, I didn't know about the pricing difference. I know I can get it cheaper at Pick N Save versus a butcher, but the butcher has the better cuts. I have had problems at some of the stores like Jewel or PNS having more fat on their cuts...but usually the meat is pretty good quality. I have no idea...must be all the cows here. Dairyland and all that...

Seriously, many major supermarkets (like Copps or Pick N Save) run specials on their meat. Sometimes that includes the tenderloin and I buy it up! I love to use the left-over smaller bits after I cut steaks for beef kabobs.

butchers hate me. when they have big sales on the fancy stuff i buy a bunch and have them prepare for whatever i need. there was a sale on london broil recently (1.99 a pound)-i buy some for steaks, but since thats a much better price than i can get on stew meat or ground beef....wanna see a butcher cry? tell him to grind up 10 pounds of london broil for burgars

i think at least to some extent-the stores offer better sales on the cuts of meat people tend not to buy allot of vs the stuff that people buy all the time.

I know this is an old thread, but just in case you would really like to know what the difference in price is caused by, here goes. Aside from geography(things will be more expensive in Chicago than elsewhere), the reason for the wide discrepancy that you're seeing is because you are looking at USDA Choice Beef Tenderloin in Chicago, and you are looking at what are widely known as "cow tenders" in Wisconsin. Tenderloins from Holstein cows are very good eating and they are extremely tender, but USDA Choice Beef Tenderloin is a far superior product. If you ask for it by name in Wisconsin, it will cost between $16.00 and $20.00 per pound there too, depending on geography. Larger cities = more expensive. Hope that helps.
