Am I crazy to be concerned about the boats?

Okay, please don't flame me, but ever since the boating accident in Lake George, NY last week, I can't stop thinking about the boats at WDW. We are planning to stay at the WL in Dec with our then 10 month old twins. I was planning to take the boat over to MK, but know I have all these crazy irrational thoughts running through my head about the safety of the boats.

I'm sure there are other mothers out there that can relate - ever since I had my babies, I seem to have the most vivid imagination as to things that can go wrong!

So, am I crazy to be a little concerned about the boats? Someone please put my mind at ease! :worried: :boat:

don't worry about the lake George incident.. The boat had not been inspected and the capacity was that of 20 years ago. I am from NY so it is the talk of our area..
Also there are no wakes that will tip the boats at WDW. Also they do a good job inspecting there before people get on. they don't want accidents...

I don't blame you....worry is being a parent! We have been on the boats from MK to the Poly numerous times. Sometimes they were full and sometimes only 5 or 6 people. Our "captains" were all pretty good drivers, no show-boats that we had. We usually sat closest to where they kept the life preservers, didn't let our stroller block anything and the boats never got close to the ferrys. We enjoyed the ride and felt safe. But, it will always come down to what you think is safest.

I know one of the captains that WDW hires for transportation, and they only hire professionals. Remember, WDW is responsible for all of it's guests, and does not want the adverse publicity or legal actions that would come from negligence. Each captain is trained for each vessel, and each boat is inspected on a daily basis before going out for public use.

Thanks for everyone's replies! Like I said, I know I'm probably being irrational, but it really helps to hear reassuring words. I'm sure we'll end up taking the boat during our trip, but I know I will be sure to figure out where the life vest are!

Nothing will happen! You do not have all the information to make a conclusion that the SAME THING will happen at WDW. The only thing of similarity between Lake George and WDW water launches are they travel on the water. Age, load, center of gravity, power, hull dimensions, hull design, gunwale depth, etc., etc., etc., are COMPLETELY DIFFERENT.

I think you should ask yourself: Are you always a fearful person??? :scared:

Crazy?.......no

Wasting a lot of time and emotion over things you can't control?.......yes

I don't think it's irrational at all. Nor do I think it's a "waste of time" or "something you can't control." Of course Disney is going to say their boats are all inspected, their captains are all trained, blah blah blah. That other outfit would have said the exact same thing if you'd asked them two months ago. The truth is, you never know. And you can take precautions. If there aren't wearable life vests, sit where you can reach a life preserver. If you have small children, consider holding them on your laps instead of leaving them strapped into strollers. Remain alert and aware. You are not powerless.
