Since this is the first kinda, sorta live trip report I have ever attempted, please understand that the actual info and photos will probably lag real time by a couple of days. And while we arrived in Anaheim, CA late Tuesday night and crashed in a local hotel, it is already Thursday afternoon.

The spectacular pools here at the Grand Californian have commanded my attention for an afternoon swim to escape our commando style attack on both Disneyland & California Adventure during our short 2 day stay here. While I decided I deserve a Vodka and Coke before plunging into the water, now is a good time to at least begin my report - there will be plenty of pics along the way.

Two weeks ago, my daughter was married. Being a consummate planner, I knew the drama and exhaustion of that day would require the need for serious recuperation. Since I suffer the grand misfortune of being the first born, Italian male in my family, I knew my destiny required that I not only endure the drama and chaos of a New York wedding, but I was also required by my heritage to pay for the entire thing - yes, barbaric and obscene - I KNOW!

And since we unfortunately reside in the New York Metropolitan area, I knew I would be forced to endure outrageous costs for a elaborate and totally overdone affair. This was my unfortunate fate - this is my horrible destiny. The most depressing part is the knowledge that a criminal portion of my entire life saving would disappear before my eyes during a 5 hour “party”.

On the positive side, I knew that this day would also represent the end of a 27 year unfair balance of power between 2 women against 1 man. Notice my knowing smile moments before the wedding:

And of course, here’s the photo of the happy bride and groom:

So the exhausting day with it’s seemingly endless drama and resulting financial ruin has finally led way to the fantastic “California Adventure” I planned to counterbalance the trauma of “gaining a son-in-law.”

OK, ready - we start with 2 days that I landing at the 7 month window in a studio at this fabulous hotel - the Grand Californian. Next, we spend a day admiring the magnificence of Yosemite Nation Park. And finally, we follow that up with a full week of rest and relaxation at beautiful Lake Tahoe. Through Interval International, I exchanged my wonderful Marriott timeshare in Williamsburg for a fully equipped 1 bedroom Marriott in Lake Tahoe.

Eight hours of flying left both me and my wife in a very cranky & *****y mood when we finally arrived in Anaheim late Tuesday night.

But to jump ahead just a bit, I was forced to surrended my complaints to a smile early Wednesday when we viewed this upon our arrival into Disneyland:

Our studio was ready @ 1pm on Wednesday. Here's the obligatory views of our room:

We lucked out with a beautiful view of the quiet pool on the 5th floor:

The next part of my report will feature this fantastic DVC hotel and our first day in Disneyland. “See you real soon!”

It sounds like your trip is a much needed break and rest! I hope you and your wife enjoy the trip and are able to unwind from the busyness. Can't wait to read more and see more pictures!! :goodvibes

Sounds like it'll be a wonderful trip. Yosemite is so beautiful. And Lake Tahoe too. And of course the Grand Californian and the place that started it all!

Have fun! Can't wait for more.

Hi WelcomeHome,
Thanks for the live trip resort and pictures! Congrats to your daughter and son in law. :goodvibes Hope you are relaxing and having a nice time. Looking forward to further updates. :thumbsup2

The hotel is magnificent! It has the same ambiance as my favorite DVC resort, Wilderness Lodge, except Grand Californian is bigger, newer and better! All the cast members were razor sharp - not only at the hotel, but at both parks also.

See these comfy, luxurious pool chairs - well prepare to defend them with your life - they were all taken both afternoons we stayed at the hotel - not because people were trying to reserve them with their towels - but because they were simply all being used - sooooo comfy!

And the pools are fabulous!

Aaawww.... Congratulations on you gaining a son in law!
And your girl is just beautiful. What a blessed family :)

How do you like your room? I can't wait to try it out this december.
We have the same taste, I LOVE WL as well. That's why I drool over GC waaaay before DVC even set foot on it.

Enjoy your well deserved vacation! And don't forget to pamper the MOB as well :)

OMG, for your "Sorta, Kinda 1st attempt at a live TR, you're off to a great start! The pictures are wonderful, the Resort is stunning, appears to be done at a higher standard than let's say BLT. Everyhting from the lobby to the room decor and furniture seems luxurious.

Congrats to you and your wife on such a lovely bride and groom!

Waiting for the next installment!

Oooh... you are getting me really excited. My husband and I will be there in 5 1/2 weeks! Thanks for the pictures and keep them coming. Let us know how the Marriott is as well:thumbsup2

Smart man. Weddings are very stressful. Quite wise of you to plan down time once it was over. Congrats on the addition to your family. :goodvibes

I love it, the parents of the bride go on a long vacation after the wedding! What a great idea.

I'm enjoying your TR, thanks for posting. I'm looking forward to the next installment.

I love it, the parents of the bride go on a long vacation after the wedding! What a great idea.

As a mom that's been through two weddings within two years I can attest to the necessity of this. :thumbsup2

WelcomeHome - Congrats on surviving the wedding and enjoy your trip to DL. :goodvibes

Loving the TR. I've never been to GC, but can say it's my favorite DVC. I love the Arts and Crafts decor, and can't wait to visit one day.

Congrats on your new family member. Your dd is beautiful.

From the Grand Calfornian Hotel, you easily enter Disneyland through Downtown Disney.

Both Disney parks in California are truly amazing. First, you are struck by how incredibly similar everything is to Disney World. But then you realize how amazingly different everything is from Disney World. You quickly begin to feel like you’ve been transformed into some sort of anti-Disney particle swirling inside some sort of Disney wave within the Twilight Zone within some sort of time warp within an alternate alien 6th dimention. It’s really very bizarre - I couldn’t stop smiling. The best part is that it’s all Disney - in a very weird, West Coast mentality kinda way.

Remember 20,000 Leagues under the Sea from 30 years ago - well now it's Nemo's Submarine Ride:

My favorite part was the music at the parks. No matter what you did and no matter where you went - they played music (and good music - great rock songs, famous pop songs, excellent jazz, oldies with California themes and even fantastic classical music). Music was piped everywhere - speakers were everywhere - even built into the seats on the rides. It was always very “up” music - you couldn’t help tapping to the beat in a good mood - VERY California Dude - I loved it! Even Space Mountain had fantastic pop rock music throughout the ride!

We ate dinner at “Cafe Orleans” because I read rave reviews for their Monte Christo” sandwich. The description of the “Three Cheese Monte Christo" is as follows: Swiss, mozzarella and Double Creme Brie fried in a light batter and served with Berry Puree dusted with Powdered Sugar.

Basically it was tons of melted cheeses surrounded by that very airy, spongy dough commonly sold at feasts and festivals. This "career" sandwich was served completely saturated in grease - I was horrified to watch many guest "knocking them down" like candy - it was astounding! If you dropped just one of these bad boys into the Gulf of Mexico, it could have easily sucked up ALL the oil from the entire BP spill. Even though I was starving, I couldn’t even finish half the sandwich for fear that my gall bladder would have to be surgically removed while I was on vacation. So much for the Monte Christo.

While I normally like to end a day at "the alternate Magic KingdomWorld from the 3rd, 4th and 5th dimentions", I'm forced to confess I fell victim to jet lag and the 3 hour time difference and opted for a soft pillow instead. No worries, my next post will be California Adventure which I can guarantee includes some "World of Color" action (I can see it in the future - remember I'm 2 days ahead of this trip report!)

Best wishes,
David

Congrats on your daughter's marriage! I have 2 little girls and not looking forward to their big days. Thank you for sharing your photos!! You obviously have a great eye for photography. Can I ask what kind of camera you used?
