Almost 8 year old and scavenger hunts

I am planning a long weekend trip in January with my almost 8 year old nephew. He has a 19 month old sister who has pretty much been the center of attention since she was born (which makes sense) and I think this trip for just him will be great for him to get some special one on one attention. (He asked the other day if we could just leave the baby at day care, so he's definitely feeling some of that sibling stuff)

He has been to WDW twice before, when he was 2.5 and 5 years old and wants to go back. We also plan to go back as a whole extended family next fall, so it will be a different kind of trip then with an almost 3 year old girl. I want this coming trip to focus on stuff that he wouldn't be able to do with a toddler in tow.

Anyways, what I am wondering is if anyone has done either the Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom or Agent Ps World Showcase adventure lately with that age kids. Was it worth doing? Were the kids into it or did they think it was lame? My nephew has done an escape room and plays puzzle type games on the ipad, so I think he would like them, but would like to hear from people who have experienced it recently.

We are staying at POR and will have 3 or 4 day hoppers, so any other suggestions for that age group would be appreciated. I know I should sign him up first thing for Jedi Training and there is a Star Wars Character meet for Disney Visa cardholders, but trying to think of other different things that he doesn't know about that we could do.

Thanks in advance.

We've never done the Sorcerer thing. I always recommend Hidden Mickeys. I love searching for them. It's a lot of fun. 8 seems like a great age for it as well.

Yes, my DS10 LOVED Sorcerer's of the Magic Kingdom and the Pirate's Adventure in MK when he was 8 years old. He could have spent our entire MK days just doing those games. He wasn't really into Agent P, but, definitely give it a shot with your son. My DS also loved Wilderness Explorer's at AK. It was fun for him to do the activities and collect the stickers and it really gives you a more in-depth look at AK.

DS also loves the water parks and mini-golf, going to the Boardwalk at night to see the jugglers and magicians (they are interactive shows, so sometime he would get picked to help with the performance) and play the carnival games. If your son is into sports at all, ESPN Club on the Boardwalk is fun - they have TV's playing games EVERYWHERE. He also loves going to Trader Sam's when it first opens at 4 pm to see the antics and special effects in the restaurant. If you have the budget for it, you may want to consider taking him on a tour that his baby sister couldn't do - like Wild Africa Trek - it's super fun and 8 is the minimum age. You could also do Pirate's League in MK so he can dress up like a pirate. The Pirates and Pals cruise out of the Contemporary is also a ton of fun. I've gone solo with my DS to WDW many times and they are super special trips! I hope you and your nephew have a great time!

Thanks for the replies! I wasn't even thinking of stuff at Animal Kingdom and the Wilderness Explorer thing might be something he'd like.

Boardwalk is another place that I often forget about, so that will be a fun thing to do one evening, since most parks close at 8 while we are there. (Although he might be ready for bed after full days in the parks)

I am so excited for this trip, so thanks again for the ideas.

Not sure when in Jan you’re going, but if it’s during the Epcot International Festival of the Arts there’s a scavenger hunt activity around World Showcase - more info here: https://disneyparks.disney.go.com/b...ing-epcot-international-festival-of-the-arts/

It’s super simple and kind of cheesy, but DS6 enjoyed it.

We are going to be there for the International Arts Festival. I just read about it the other day and I am psyched because I'd never heard of it before. I think he'd like the scavenger hunt for that. Thanks for the heads up on that idea.

DS and I did it on a father/son trip this past Feb. We really enjoyed the festival. It was like a mini-F&G or F&W without all the chaos and crowds. Some really great photo opps too.

Hope y’all have fun!

During our recent POFQ visit there was hunt set up around the resort (Halloween theme). Long shot but I'm wondering if you may find something at your resort?

Good point! I forgot about the Arts Festival! DS10 and I did it last year and it was really fun! They had famous artworks that you could step behind and put your head through to make it look like you were in the picture - we had great fun with that! They also had a big mural that you could help paint - again, really fun! If he likes music, plan to see one of the Broadway performances at EP during the festival. They were AMAZING last year!

I think this Art Festival sounds like so much fun! And he loves music and musicals. We have a local theater that does a summer series of kids performances and we've been going to those for the past few years and we saw Newsies when it toured in Boston and he loved it. I think he'd really like the broadway performances and that is something we both love, so a great thing to experience together. (And it's not really something the rest of the family would be into).

Oh, that's awesome!! He will probably love the show, then! They did all Disney tunes last year. We saw Ashley Brown (Mary Poppins on Broadway) and Josh Strickland (Tarzan on Broadway) and they the most amazing rendition of Let It Go I've ever heard! I think the two of you will have the best time!

My DD & DS loved doing Sorcerers of the Kingdom- they discovered it and wanted to do the whole thing when they were 8. Perfect age!

My DD8 LOVES the Sorcerers of the Kingdom game. She has done it on both our trips at age 6.5 and 8. WE all got our cards, each day we were in MK so she got our cards too.
