Hello, all! I am a Metairie, LA Expatriote. Well, not voluntarily, actually. We evacuated for hurricane Katrina at my DH's work's request. We had to get the backup tapes out of state to keep them safe. We have since relocated here permanently (or at least for a few years) because his job was not working out due to the damage caused by the hurricane. He is in the IT industry. My employer was able to relocate me here at the same pay and working in a similar position. SWEET. We stayed with DH's cousins for FOUR months (living in 2 rooms) before we were able to rent one of their houses and be on our own. We still have clothes in garbage bags in the closet. It's amazing how quickly you get used to the evacuee lifestyle! Somehow I cannot make myself unpack. We are trying to sell our house in Metairie and after the 3rd time, I think it's going to go through. My DH has since found a good paying job and we have enrolled our son in school here. My son says he does not want to return to New Orleans (Metairie). There are 2 problems here. First, we have limited family, but they are saints on earth. They housed 17 people for over a month and there were NO fights. My parents moved to Houston and my DS and DB(sometimes) stayed in LA. I miss them terribly. The second problem is that we really have no friends here, being that we are new to the area. My neighbor is 92 (she tells me every time I see her) so she is not much help. I am hoping one (some?) of you live in this area and we can maybe get together for a meet or dinner. I have been told that I am a good cook, if that helps. If you need more info please let me know. We are just trying to fit in here.

Thanks!

i'm in middle TN, bout 3 hours away but thought I'd bump and say hi! Smileys aren't working for me or I'd insert a pleasantly waving one here

hi!

And your smileys are working, by the way! Thanks for posting. I thought I was going to kill my own thread. How embarrassing!

Such a heartfelt post, I want to give it a BUMP and give you a pat on the back for doing such proactive work in adapting to a new place. I am impressed.

Sending you warm friendly vibes from 1000 miles north in NYC.

I'm less than a mile from the state line! I work in the Raleigh area and I pass the zoo every day on my way home from work. (I refuse to take the interstate here. People in Memphis drive worse than New Orleans people!scared1: )
We haven't done the zoo yet, but we were talking about going as soon as the weather gets a little better! Where in TN are you? :

Nashville. About 3.5 hours from you. We're talking about an early may weekend in Memphis, if I manage to stay off bedrest till then!

DH's cousin live in Nashville. We'd like to go there soon, too. It's more feasible since he'll have no vacation time until next year. A weekend Disney trip won't cut it for me, so we thought we'dtry Nashville, Gatlinburg, or Dollywood. Do you have any opinions on any of those locations? (I actually became infatuated with DH when we went to Gatlinburg. (I was 11, he was 12...we were next door neighbors and our families went together.)

By the way, when are you due? We have boy, 11. Took 4 years and a very difficult pregnancy to have him, so I know how you feel!

I live in central Mississippi, but am looking to possibly move north after graduation. I know a couple of gals from Southaven that I met on an internet/Mississippi Moms group. Let me know if you'd like the link to check it out. :)

I'm due in July, this is #3, you'd think I would have learned by now! The previous two were both very difficult in their own unique ways. I kept praying this one would be super easy, but no luck so far :confused3 Our daughters are 5 & 3

Nashville is fun if you've never been here. not as much to see and do here as there is in gatlinburg though!

We love the mountains there is a lot to do there between gatlinburg and pigeon forge, shopping, touristy stuff, hiking, etc. The aquarium there is really great. There is also the big aquarium in chattanooga (about 2 hours south of us) and there are other places to see there, ruby falls, rock city etc. Then there is the space and rocket center in huntsville AL if your son likes space stuff at all. It's only about 1.5 hours south of nashville.

Overall there are lots of things to see and do, I wonder if there is a book for memphis like there is for nashville. We bought this book called 'daytrips from nashville' when we first moved here and it has about 200 different destinations in it and we've slowly been checking each of them off our list.

Also, you are only about 3 hours from hot springs arkansas. It's a great place to visit and relax. If your son likes outdoors type stuff there are places there where you can dig gemstones (mostly quartz) and you can keep whatever you find. It's a huge yard where they dump loads of dirt with already mined stuff and you just go in and dig. we've done that and it's fun and exhausting and we've found some interesting stuff. for kids it makes a great conversation piece to take back to school. We've taken older kids who came back with plenty of stuff to share about with friends.

wow, I really need a vacation!

Forgot to mention that if you're headed this way, let me know! We can do lunch :teeth:
